St Peter's Cathedral enews - Friday 30 July 2021
From the Locum Dean

We are indeed living in interesting times. Many thanks to all parishioners for continuing prayerful and practical support for St Peter’s Cathedral. As you are aware we are rising from our lockdown, and hopefully this will reflect the glory of the phoenix rising from the ashes.
We welcome The Rev'd Dr Theo McCall as our preacher on Sunday morning. It was to be the day of the launch of a book recording the contribution of female pilots to air traffic. A chapter within this book describes the contribution of which Theo’s mother, Marion, made in her role of pilot for the Bishop while in the diocese of Willochra. Sadly, the proposed book launch, along with the proposed morning tea, has been postponed. The new date will be advertised in due course.
There are new restrictions and recommendations that will require our consideration and obedience. The first and foremost is the requirement that we are to wear masks in all public areas. This includes while in the Cathedral during worship. There are medical exclusions for people who have a legitimate medical, or a mental health reason, for not wearing the mask. For the rest of us, refusal to wear a mask during worship will bring the Stewards and the COVID Marshals to your side with a request to go home. We do have a duty of care that embraces all of us.
There will be no communal singing, Congregational or Choral, until the restriction is lifted. Please pray for our Choristers as they prepare for a joyful return in the future.

Fortunately, we are in a position where a Cantor can be employed for our 10.30am Eucharist and for 6pm Evensong. Anthony, the Cathedral Director of Music, is exploring possibilities for introducing different and liturgically appropriate music in the place of some hymns. Thank you for this initiative, Anthony.

Worship this week will bring some new experiences. When receiving Communion, it is important that you wear the mask while moving forward to receive the sacrament into your hands, then step aside, and quickly raise your mask to consume the sacrament, and then pull the mask down again. For the people who do not wish to come forward to receive the sacrament, and for those participating in the live feed, the prayer of Spiritual Communion will be offered. We introduced the prayer for Spiritual Communion last week and it was well received.
Next week: I am pleased to announce that we will begin our weekday services again from Monday next week. The Lady Chapel is limited for numbers so, if necessary, we will adjourn to the Nave Altar for the services. I think that for most early morning services the chapel will be adequate. The Friday morning congregation may need to move to the nave. The Thursday congregation will also need to be in the nave.

The celebrant of each service will make the appropriate decision for where the eucharist will be celebrated. Please remember that even with a small congregation you will be required to wear a mask while inside the Cathedral.

– The Rev'd Adrian Stephens, Locum Dean
Physical Distancing on Sunday
On Sunday you will notice some new signage on the pews - every second pew should be kept empty to allow for appropriate physical distancing. Extra chairs have also been placed in the side aisles.
Just before lockdown, Rev'd Peter was able to bless Cathedral member David Shang's new home. Congratulations to David!
Quote for the Week

‘I am about to do a new thing; now it springs forth, do you not perceive it? I will make a way in the wilderness and rivers in the desert.’
– Isaiah 43:19

(Quoted by the Archbishop of Canterbury this week)

The image below is a painting by Cathedral Member John Hamilton titled Nature’s Palette.

'Painted from a photo taken from the plane flying from Perth to Adelaide. The day was very clear as we flew over the arid land of Western Australia and South Australia.'
