Suspicious and Widespread Fires
With at least four dead, authorities are investigating the potential causes of almost 60 forest fires across the Mediterranean and southern Aegean regions in Turkey. Since they began last Wednesday, the fires have destroyed an estimated 500 acres (200 hectares) of forest, leading to at least 20 village evacuations and over 50 hospitalizations. 38 helicopters and 4,000 firefighters were deployed to fight the blazes. According to the Turkish agriculture and forestry ministry most of the fires have now been contained. While southern Turkey is known for its hot and dry conditions, authorities are not ruling out arson as a possibility given the suspicious and coincidental nature of the multiple fires.

Israeli Tanker Attacked
The Mercer Street ship, owned by Zodiac Maritime, an Israeli-owned company, was attacked on Thursday, with two crew members being killed. The attack happened near the island of Masirah in the Arabian Sea, off the coast of Oman. The tanker was travelling from Dar es Salaam in Tanzania to Fujairah in the United Arab Emirates when it was attacked, with no cargo on board. Details of the attack are unclear. With Zodiac Maritime's headquarters being located in London, the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations reported on the incident stating no piracy was involved, whereas Zodiac Maritime characterized the attack as piracy with no further explanation.

Snowfall in Southern Brazil
Temperatures dropped in Brazil last night - enough to create conditions for a rare snowfall in some places. More than 40 cities in the state of Rio Grande do Sul had icy conditions and at least 33 municipalities had snow, reported the Brazillian meteorology company Somar Meteorologia. While cold weather could have a damaging impact on coffee, sugar, and orange exports, Brazillians were in good spirits about the snow. Many posted pictures to social media of them making snowmen and sliding on ice for the first time.
