From the Interim Rector - 7/30 |

If you have been following the news regarding Covid (and who hasn't), the CDC's recommendation announced earlier this week comes as no surprise. And, as we recognize and acknowledge our shared responsibility to our entire parish community, including those who use our facility during the week, we will follow the CDC's recommendations. That means, beginning this Sunday:
1. Masks will be required at both services. 2. At Communion, please remove your mask as you approach the altar rail. We will continue to provide both the Consecrated Bread and the Wine, but as previously noted, you may receive only the Consecrated Bread if you wish. 3. Coffee Hour will continue for those who wish to remain. The door to the Garden will be left open and, weather permitting, you are invited to enjoy Coffee Hour by taking your coffee and pastries to the Garden. Naturally, remaining or not remaining for Coffee Hour is something each person must decide for themselves. 4. Sunday School will continue, but masks will be required. 5. We will not at this time be reinstating temperature checks or contract tracing. Also, at this time, we will not reinstate pre-registration for attendance. 6. The rows of chairs will be distanced at 6 feet apart and additional rows will be added to increase seating options. As you take your seats please be aware of your proximity to others (both ahead of you in the row and behind you.) Please be sensitive to your neighbors and respect social distancing. Also, and this can feel a bit uncomfortable which is why I mention it here, if you are already seated in a row and someone sits closer to you then you are comfortable with please feel free to move a few seats over or to politely ask the other person to move. If there is ever a time when we need to extend every measure of grace and courtesy, now is that time. Let us not be easily offended by another's unthinking behavior. As we move through the month of August additional changes may be required and will be announced in as timely a manner as possible.
Knowing that as a country, and even as a city, we were heading in this direction due to the Delta variant it can still feel unsettling to once again feel unsafe in social settings. Please know that such feelings of anxiety, and possibly even depression, are completely normal. Please know also that Mo. Elise and I are here for you in any way that you would find helpful. Please don't hesitate to call or write, or even stop by for a chat if you're so inclined.
And, lastly, remember these words from St. Paul to the Romans: “What then are we to say about these things? If God is for us, who is against us? Who will separate us from the love of Christ? Will hardship, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword? No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us.For I am convinced that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor rulers, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, nor height, nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.” Faithfully yours, Roy+ |

VBS 2021: Discovery on Adventure Island! |
|
Church of the Epiphany's 2021: Discovery on Adventure Island!
Dates: Monday, August 23 through Friday, August 27th, 9:00 am to 12:00 pm.
We're so excited to offer VBS in-person this year! Discovery on Adventure Island invites children to arise and shine because the light of God's love has come and is shining on them. The children will be empowered by exploring ways God shines great light in the world and by learning how they can also shine God’s light by reflecting what they’ve learned. Through stories in the Old and New Testaments, this program will show students how connection with God brings the invitation to shine God’s light in a world that needs it now more than ever.
You can pay your fee of $75/child two different ways. Visit the homepage of EpiphanyNYC.org and choose the green "Give" button at the right side of the page. When you enter your payment, please choose "Vacation Bible School" from the drop down menu. Or, you can pay by check sent to the Church at 1393 York Avenue at East 74th Street.
Please contact Associate Rector, The Rev. Elise Hanley at hanley@epiphanynyc.org, if you have any questions. We look forward to seeing you and your child at VBS!

Music Notes - 8/1 |
Franz Schmidt, Austro-Hungarian composer, cellist, and pianist, owned a powerful sense of musical form and structure, brilliantly evidenced in his Präludium und Fuge D-dur, 'Halleluja.’ The ‘Halleluja’ prelude is flamboyant, with its heraldic chords and flashy bravura strings of notes. Its fugue is no less appealing, with its three-section structure and its massive chordal ending.
Ralph Vaughan Williams was dedicated to preserving the traditions of English folk song and Renaissance church music. His Five Mystical Songs are settings of poems by the metaphysical poet George Herbert, from his 1633 collection, The Temple. In “The Call,” the grace of God finds an elegant echo in Vaughan Williams' deft melodic lines. César Franck’s “Panis Angelicus” (Latin for "Bread of Angels" or "Angelic Bread") is the penultimate strophe of the hymn Sacris solemniis written by Saint Thomas Aquinas. For Franck, music was an act of faith, and his personal setting of this Eucharistic text conveys a spirit of deep sincerity. |
