October 2021
Hi <<First Name>>,

We're delighted to share the first of our updates with you.  Every quarter, we'll bring you a roundup of the latest charity news and details of any upcoming events or talks.

We hope you will enjoy catching up with all our activities.

Highlights this quarter include the relaunch of our early diagnosis campaign with ALK Positive UK and the Ruth Strauss Foundation now with resources available for members to share with their own GP and community pharmacists as well as an inspiring account of a Scottish road trip from Lizzi Brazier in the Meet Our Trustees feature.

As a charity, we have also been involved in drug appraisals with NICE and the Scottish Medicines Consortium (SMC) . In the last few months, for the approval of Osimertinib as an adjuvant treatment for early stage EGFR positive lung cancer, we have also submitted to the SMC appraisal of Osimertinib as a first line treatment in Scotland. More news on these appraisals when decisions have been reached but we are delighted that the patient’s voice has been heard in these arenas.

EGFR Positive UK is run solely by volunteers. If you would like to offer your feedback or get more involved please contact us here.  We currently have an opening for an experienced Treasurer.

Follow us on our Facebook charity page or join our Facebook Group where our community regularly share information and first-hand experiences of living with EGFR mutation positive lung cancer.
Our early diagnosis campaign
EGFR Positive UK, ALK Positive UK and the Ruth Strauss Foundation jointly developed a campaign urging GPs and other primary health care professionals to act on lung cancer symptoms.

We have relaunched this very successful campaign – “See Through the Symptoms” an early diagnosis campaign urging primary healthcare professionals to investigate lung cancer symptoms regardless of age or smoking status.

We have already served up 1.2 million impressions of the campaign on social media and in specialist publications and we will be repeating this throughout October and November.

We now have downloadable and print at home leaflets which you can share with your own GP or community pharmacist.

WE NEED YOUR HELP – Complete the EGFR Positive 2021 membership survey
Taking part in the Survey gives us invaluable information on the make-up of our membership and will inform the agenda and aims of the Charity going forward

This year has seen us positively influence the EGFR + landscape. Medical professionals, pharmaceutical companies, cancer charities and other related organisations value the voice and experience of the patient and we are increasingly being invited to work with them.

Meet our trustees:  Lizzie Brazier, Secretary and Patient Liaison
When I was diagnosed in April 2019 with Stage IV, inoperable and incurable lung cancer, my world fell apart, but, thankfully, this proved to be just another step on my journey. Treatment with a TKI worked amazingly well and gave me back time to be with family, friends and to do, sometimes, things I’d only dreamed about.

Two years ago a friend and I ‘did’ Europe in eight days (mainly to drive the Stelvio Pass in her Mazda sports car, roof down (there was snow on the ground) listening to Matt Munro (Italian Job aficionados will understand).

Her latest madcap scheme, of which I was a ‘willing’ participant, in the little car of course, was Scotland’s North Coast 500, eight days driving on some of the narrowest, scariest roads The Highlands could supply.

A date for the diary -  Clinical trials from a patient's perspective
Thursday 11th November 3.30pm
Dr Anna Minchom will be talking about clinical trials from a patient's perspective - what does taking part in a trial involve, what is the difference between a phase 1 and phase 3 trial, why and when would a trial be worth considering. Please send any of your questions for Dr Minchom to contact@egfrpositive.org.uk
Dr Minchom is a Consultant Medical Oncologist and BRC Clinical Scientist in the Drug Development Unit at the Royal Marsden Hospital and the Institute of Cancer Research, and the Lung Unit at the Royal Marsden Hospital.

As principal investigator on early phase drug trials, including first-in-human clinical trials, her main research focus is using a biomarker-driven and translational approach to develop novel drugs and drug combinations for the treatment of patients with lung cancer and mesothelioma.

ALK Positive UK members will be joining us for this talk. Zoom invite will be posted to our
Facebook page.  We hope you will be able to join us.
A Celebration of the life of Kathy Beattie, Co-Founder of EGFR Positive UK  by Angela Terry
On the 25th September 2021 it was my privilege to visit the preparations for an evening of celebration for Kathy who founded EGFR Positive UK with Jenny Abbott.

Kathy, who died earlier this year, wanted a party to celebrate her life and her family created just that. There was live music, comedy acts, a DJ, an auction, and a raffle, all in a venue with the best dance floor ever!
Jenny and Kathy first met in February 2019 and from this initial meeting, as well as becoming firm friends, began the work of making sure that EGFR lung cancer patients had both support and a voice in the arenas where decisions which would affect them were made. Kathy was passionate about helping others who found themselves in the same position as her.
