Use of Face Coverings to be Required Indoors
in Public Places

Effective Tuesday, August 3, 2021 at 12:01 AM
Bay Area Health Officials from the Counties of Alameda, Contra Costa, Marin, San Francisco, San Mateo, Santa Clara, Sonoma, and the City of Berkeley have issued orders requiring the use of face covering indoors to prevent the spread of COVID-19, effective Tuesday, August 3, 2021. The order will remain in effect until it is rescinded, superseded, or amended in writing by the Health Officer.
Health officials state that the orders aim to reduce community transmission of COVID-19 as a substantial level of vaccinated people are becoming infected with the more transmissible Delta variant as well as many unvaccinated people. Vaccination remains the most powerful tool in the fight against COVID-19, including the Delta variant. Bay Area officials urge all unvaccinated residents 12 years and older to get vaccinated as soon as possible.

The Order requires that face coverings must be worn over the mouth and nose - regardless of vaccination status - in all indoor settings, venues, gatherings, and workplaces, including but not limited to:
  • Offices
  • Retail stores
  • Restaurants and bars (see exception below regarding eating or drinking)
  • Theaters
  • Family Entertainment Centers
  • Conference and event centers
  • State and local offices serving the public
The only exemptions are as follows:
  • While working alone in a closed office or room
  • While actively eating and/or drinking
  • While swimming or showering in a fitness facility
  • While obtaining a medical or cosmetic service involving the head or face for which temporary removal of the face covering is necessary to perform the service
  • See Health Order for additional exemptions, including indoor live events, indoor religious gatherings, indoor recreational sports, gyms, and yoga studios, etc.
Non-Public Indoor Settings
The Alameda County Health Officer strongly recommends that fully vaccinated people, as well as unvaccinated and not full vaccinated persons wear masks in non-public indoor settings when people from multiple households or at higher risk of severe COVID-19 infection are present.
