Bishop Prison Team outside HMP Werrington

Bishop Libby joins Bishop's Prison Team

Bishop Rachel Treweek, Bishop of Gloucester, has created a collaborative team to support her in her role as Anglican Bishop for HM Prisons in England and Wales.

Bishop Libby will support Bishop Rachel in work with young offenders, which will be a natural extension to Bishop Libby’s work as vice-chair of The Children's Society. Bishop Michael Ipgrave, Bishop of Lichfield, will support with the male estate.

Bishop Libby said, "I am delighted to be joining this team and look forward to working with Bishop Rachel and Bishop Michael with other partners working across the criminal justice system. I have a particular passion to see restorative justice leading to transformed lives with meaningful integration and contribution to community. Sharing with this team complements the work I currently engage with through The Children's Society in our shared commitment to the most vulnerable, and at risk, children and young people in our land."

The new episcopal prison team marked the beginning of their work together on Thursday, 29 July with a joint visit to the Diocese of Lichfield when each visited separate prisons.

Kay's Everyday Faith

Kay is a reader at Wingerworth parish church. She says her faith guides her in her ministry and helps her understand how to best help others.

Our faith is about so much more than going to church on Sunday. In this video series, we explore how people's everyday faith helps them in their daily lives.

Derby Cathedral Choir supporting Euro's

Over 40,000 view Cathedral Choir's "Three Lions"

Whilst we don't want to bring up the result of the Euro's, we did want to share some great news that Derby Cathedral Choirs rendition of the Lightening Seeds "Three Lions" achieved over 40,000 views on Facebook.

Alexander Binns, Director of Music, said  "At the end of a challenging year for the Cathedral Choristers, it was great to be asked to sing 'Three Lions' by BBC Radio Derby as part of the Euro 2020 celebrations. It gave the choristers the opportunity to 'let their hair down' and sing something a little more light-hearted, and plenty of fun was had in the process! We've had hundreds of comments from well-wishers, some of whom have described how it made cathedral choirs more relevant in the 21st century, and it is this sort of outreach with the wider community that is vital for cathedral musicians in order to ensure the sustainability of the tradition well into the future."

Comments to the video included "This is just wonderful, I’ve been in floods of tears watching it. Thank you for sharing it and reminding us all just how wonderful Derby can be".

Wirksworth Team Ministry lead
CofE National Sunday Worship online service

Wirksworth Team Ministry celebrated God our shepherd by leading the National CofE online worship service for the Seventh Sunday after Trinity. The service included prayers, music and reflection.

The service was led by Revd Carla Vicêncio Prior, team vicar. Team rector Revd Canon David Truby read the Gospel and Revd Alan Griggs, lead rural chaplain, read the first lesson. There was a huge community feel to the service as members of each church within the team ministry were involved. A particular highlight was members of All Saints Bradbourne singing Psalm 23 to the tune by Howard Goodall (aka the theme tune to The Vicar of Dibley).

Young Christian Climate Network logo

YCCN Relay to COP26

The Young Christian Climate Network (YCCN), an action-focused community of Christians aged 18-30 are undertaking a Relay which started from the G7 in Cornwall in June 2021, to the COP26 UN climate talks in Glasgow in November.

They are doing this as an act of solidarity and faith, believing that no country should be pushed further into debt because of climate change.

The walk will be reaching the Diocese of Derby:

  • Netherseal - Monday, 30 August
  • Melbourne - Tuesday, 31 August
  • Aston on Trent - Wednesday, 1 September
  • Chesterfield - Sunday, 5 September
  • Bamford (Hope Valley) -  Tuesday, 7 September
  • Chapel-en-le-Frith - Wednesday, 8 September

There are many ways that local churches and church leaders that are on or near the route can get involved:

  1. Taking inspiration from YCCN’s boat, they are creating a fleet of paper prayer boats to take to COP26 in Glasgow. The resources you need to create a paper prayer boat are available here.
  2. Hold a prayer vigil or church service to encourage your local community to think about the issues of climate justice.
  3. Join in for a section of the walk to encourage those walking, and connect with young Christian climate activists. Sign up here
  4. Invite your local MP to: join you on the walk or attend your event / church service, or meet with you to discuss the issue of climate justice.
  5. If your church is near the route, please do consider hosting the walkers, either as a stop off point for refreshments along the way, or potentially offering some nearby accommodation to the start/end of a leg.

Bouncing Forward Book

The Big Church Read

The 4th Big Church Read takes place from 8 Sept - 17 Nov, with the book 'Bouncing Forwards' by Patrick Regan.

In the book, Patrick draws on his own journey of making peace with his on-going anxiety, to look honestly and vulnerably at the temptation to wait for the day when all will be well whilst missing out on what’s happening in the here and now.

This is a great activity for parish groups to get involved, or you might prefer to take part individually.
