An Update From The Session

The elders met July 14.  In addition to routine business, they made important decisions regarding our COVID policies and the sign outside our building.

Starting immediately, we will begin passing the communion plates to deliver the bread in individual baggies.  We will continue to place the cups in the pew racks for the time being.  We plan to restart Sunday school and fellowship time in Fellowship Hall on September 19th.  (Holypalooza will happen on 9/12.)  The Reopening Task Force will meet at its earliest convenience to produce recommendations on when and how to restart the choir and Parents' Night Out.

The staff and elders received a fair amount of feedback following the placement of the Presbyterian symbol in Pride colors in the church yard.  That feedback ranged from strong disapproval to strong approval.  Recognizing that we may have moved too quickly, the elders revisited the decision this month.  After extended, respectful and heartfelt discussion, the session made the following decisions:

     1. To place the Pride sign in Fellowship Hall

     2. To place another sign in neutral colors, with a broader message of inclusion of all people, out in the yard

     3. To present a multi-week event during the Sunday school time, starting 9/19.  This event would include an examination of biblical texts and denominational policies pertinent to the various issues  raised by sexuality/gender/inclusion and other related topics.  It would also offer opportunities for people to share their perspectives and stories should they so desire.

All pastors and elders vow upon ordination to "further the peace, purity and unity of the church".  We pray our actions this month will do this very thing.

We invite all to join us to worship outdoors this Sunday, June 27 at the Ute Shelter at Deming Park. Bring your chairs or blankets as we gather together to worship together in God's creation!

We are a Matthew 25 church!
Our congregation has accepted the PC(USA)’s invitation to follow Jesus’ teachings in Matthew 25:31–46 by becoming active disciples and making a difference in our community and the world. As part of our Matthew 25 commitment, we pledge to embrace these areas of focus:

• Dismantling structural racism by fearlessly applying our faith to advocate and break down the systems, practices and thinking that underlie discrimination, bias, prejudice and oppression of people of color

• Eradicating systemic poverty by acting on our beliefs and working to change laws, policies, plans and structures in our society that perpetuate economic exploitation of people who are poor

Working together in our community, we build congregational vitality by deepening and energizing our faith and growing as joyful leaders and disciples as we share the gospel of Jesus Christ in word and deed.

Prayers for this week:
Morning:

Almighty God,
give me wisdom to perceive You,
intelligence to understand You,
diligence to seek You,
patience to wait for You,
eyes to behold You,
a heart to meditate upon You
and life to proclaim You,
through the power of the Spirit of
   our Lord Jesus Christ.
Amen
   -- Benedict of Nusia (480-543)
Evening:

The Sacred Three
To save,
To shield,
To surround
The hearth,
The house,
The household
This eve,
This night,
And every night,
Each single night.
Amen
