The NYC Dept. of Sanitation will pick up your food scraps and turn them into compost or renewable energy. Your building must sign up for this free, voluntary service, even if it participated in the program in the past.

Here’s how your building can get started:

•  Ask a board member, building manager or landlord to call 311 or, follow the link  https://www1.nyc.gov/assets/dsny/site/services/food-scraps-and-yard-waste-page/overview-residents-organics to sign up online now.  DOS will notify your building representative when enrollment opens in August.  You can also get to the link by Googling “Curbside Composting NYC.”

• Enroll the building in August when notified. It takes less than 5 minutes. Composting will start first in neighborhoods with the most requests! DOS will provide brown, vermin-proof bins if your building doesn’t have them already.
