County Durham bid launched for UK City of Culture 2025

Dear Friends,

Welcome to our July newsletter. I start with the exciting news that working with Durham County Council a bid has been submitted for County Durham as UK City of Culture 2025. The Department for Culture, Media and Sport has indicated that collections of towns can apply, and we are committed to ensuring the whole county will benefit.
Our partnership represents large institutions, smaller companies, and individual artists who between them work across a vast range of cultural activity.  A successful bid will help us engage with more people celebrating the amazing cultural assets of County Durham, whether it be the world leading heritage institutions, community-based activity, collaborations with international artists, or imaginative use of digital technology.
The bid was announced on Monday 19th July with a media launch at Beamish. Media coverage was positive and widespread. For the Northern Echo article, click here.

As we ease our way out of lockdown and remerge with real time, physical events, Durham County Council is running a grant scheme designed specifically to support events be delivered in a covid secure way.  Whether as an audience member, as a participant or performer, knowing an event is being delivered in as safe a way as possible is reassuring, and the scheme will help provide the resources required to do so.  Please see below for more information and how to apply.

This newsletter also features other funding opportunities available from a variety of grant giving organisations.

Stay safe and well.

Durham County Council Covid Recovery Grants Scheme

Durham County Council is running two culture focused grant schemes open to organisations, groups and individuals across County Durham to help with covid recovery.  One is to support events that are already planned to take place in a covid secure way. The other is to support organisations, community groups and the voluntary sector with new events and activities designed to bring communities and people back together safely following covid lockdowns.
The scheme for events already planned is now open for applications. A panel is meeting on Tuesday 3rd August to consider applications, which are to be received no later than Wednesday 28th July.  There will be further rounds of applications to this scheme running from September 2021 to March 2022.

Calling cultural practitioners!

Have you attended our network sessions for creatives on Thursdays at 7pm on Zoom yet? If not, come along!  The sessions, which last for just an hour, are informal and bring together people from across the county to hear speakers, talk about the training and development opportunities they would like to access, be pointed to sources of support and explore opportunities for collaboration.

Based on the information gathered at these events, Northern Heartlands will be offering some more formal, expert-led training sessions and Culture Durham will be shaping up its future work programme.

Culture Durham has commissioned Northern Heartlands to run these networking, training, and development sessions thanks to support from the North East LEP and Durham County Council.
