Deadly Flooding In Central China
Record-breaking rainfall is causing severe flooding in central China, leading to widespread evacuations, serious damages, and numerous fatalities. In the city of Zhengzhou in Henan province, a subway train full of passengers became trapped in a flooded underground tunnel, leaving 12 people dead. Also, in Zhengzhou, 150 nursery school children and their teachers had to be rescued as the school flooded. At least 200,000 evacuations have occurred in Henan with roads turning into fast-paced rivers, sweeping up pedestrians, debris, and cars. Several dams and reservoirs have also reached dangerously high warning levels. Climate change is one factor being attributed to extreme weather events like China's extraordinary rainfall this summer.

U.K. to Override Brexit Agreement
U.K. ministers are outlining a plan to overhaul the Northern Ireland Protocol, a deal made in Brexit agreements that keeps a soft border between Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland. The U.K. is warning that it will override the Northern Ireland Protocol if the E.U. is not able to reach a better agreement. Ministers are worried that certain exports from Britain, such as chilled meats, will no longer be able to be exported to Northern Ireland. British retailers operating in Northern Ireland have warned customers that the Protocol could lead to higher food prices and less variety. The U.K. and E.U. aimed during Brexit negotiations to avoid a hard border between Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland, in fear of reigniting conflicts between Unionists and Nationalists in Northern Ireland which had claimed thousands of lives over 30 years. The U.K. is not expected to invoke Article 16 of the protocol, which would mean a suspension of Brexit, but rather to suggest the changes to the E.U.

This map depicts how goods between Britain and Northern Ireland are checked under the Northern Ireland Protocol. U.K. ministers are proposing changes make these checks more lax.  Click on the map to learn more.

Brisbane to Host 2032 Olympics
The International Olympic Committee (IOC) officially voted today to select Brisbane, Australia, as host city of the Summer Games in 2032. This will be the third time Australia has hosted the Olympic Games. It previously hosted the Games in Melbourne in 1956 and in Sydney in 2000. The Committee now has selected cities to host the next three Summer Games: Paris in 2024, Los Angeles in 2028, and Brisbane in 2032. Cities in Germany, Qatar, and Hungary, among others, also submitted bids for 2032. Many of them rescinded their bids due to lack of support at home. Those cities are eligible to apply to host future games if they wish.

Yesterday's Answer
Q: At 600 feet (183 meters) long, 69 feet (21 meters) high, and 193 years old, what is the world's oldest major train viaduct?

A: The Sankey Viaduct, England
It's easy to take for granted the infrastructure of modern life that's become part of the day-to-day scenery. England's Liverpool & Manchester Railway was the world's first intercity railway, commissioned in 1826. But the Sankey Valley was the most significant obstacle between the two cities, as not only would the viaduct need to safely support the trains on the railway traversing the valley, but also to accommodate shipping on the canal below. The resulting structure, with high arches to allow the barges' sails to pass through, stood as a remarkable feat of engineering in its own right.
