As years of research and polling demonstrate the efficacy of our education programs in bridging academics and the real world, I was disheartened to read Measure of America’s recent report: A Decade Undone – Youth Disconnection in the Age of Coronavirus.
After declining for 8 straight years, the researchers expect the number of teens and young adults disconnected from both school and work to spike dramatically with the potential to top six million as a result of the pandemic. While it is clear that young people of all backgrounds will suffer, low-income people of color will be the hardest hit.
To help reverse this trend, the Center is undertaking an exciting initiative where up to 75 at-risk students from Adams 12 Five Star School District (District) will participate in two weeks of summer day camps. These camps are part of the Colorado Education Initiative’s Summer Recovery program and feature the Center’s hallmark program, Young AmeriTowne. Dedicated exclusively to the District, the camps will be facilitated by the Center’s expert program staff and have been designed to meet students and families’ needs to expedite a smooth transition from elementary to middle school, a particularly vulnerable time.
Thank you for your continued support which allows us to fulfill our mission and keep students connected to school and work despite ongoing challenges.
Sincerely,
Rich Martinez
