Welcome to
Learn-2-Paddle
- July 26th 2021 -

Dear Parents/Guardians

Welcome to the Calgary Canoe Club!

We are very excited to offer Learn 2 Paddle (L2P) camps for the 2021 season. Camp runs 9am-4pm. Please read through all the information in this email. There is no pre and post camp care, please show up for drop off 8:45-9:00am and for pick up 4:00-4:15pm. Paddlers are checked in and out each day by coaches. In the event of unforeseen circumstances with a late pick up, coaches will direct paddlers to remain with boat bay staff in front of the office until picked up.

You may occasionally receive emails from our main L2P coaches, Leah and AJ,  in regards to activities/events. When appropriate, we encourage all paddlers to advocate for their needs and communicate directly with their coaches. Please email coaches at; l2p@calgarycanoeclub.com if you have any questions or concerns.

First Day Procedures

On the first day of each 2 week session ( June 28th, July 5, July 12, July 26, August 9), paddlers will meet their coaches, AJ, Leah and assistants, next to the parking lot. The coaches will be waiting in the field next to the clubhouse to greet paddlers as they arrive. Tables and signs will indicate where they will sign in and where they will gather. We may have a tent up as well. Paddlers will be given instructions on where to meet for the remainder of the camp and where to put their bag with spare clothes and lunch/snacks.

If there are paddlers that bike to the Club they can leave their bike on the racks by the club. Coaches will direct them to the rack.

If you cannot attend the first day (or any other day)

Please let us know if your child will not be attending. We will greet them on the next session day, and review the basics so they can jump in with the rest of the group!

Weather Cancellations

Weather may force paddlers off the water. We do not have access to the hall for alternate activities. Therefore, in the case of extreme cold or electrical storms for the majority of the day we will cancel activities at the Club and paddlers will not attend. Where possible, make-up days will be available to paddlers and we will contact parents to reschedule paddlers on alternate days through the summer. We strive to communicate weather cancellations within 24 hours via email and post announcements at www.calgary canoe club.com.

We do have carport tents set up on the upper deck for paddlers to access on days with light rain for their lunch and snack breaks as well as when it’s very hot and some time in the shade is a good idea. Cubbies are located under the tent for paddlers to store their bags in, please do not bring any valuables.

Lunch procedures

All paddlers have a supervised lunch hour. L2P is scheduled 12:00 pm-1:00 pm. Paddlers will always remain on site at the Club during the break so if they need to miss the morning or afternoon the lunch hour is the time to drop off or pick up (please make coaches aware of this). Paddlers are expected in their scheduled training sessions throughout the day unless the parent has notified us.

To thrive at the Canoe Club, paddlers should bring:

  • A PFD (Personal Flotation Device). Please try to purchase your own if possible. No special designs are required (Walmart, Canaditan Tire have good basic PFD’s)

  • A water bottle, running shoes and flip-flops (dock shoes)

  • Appropriate clothing for the weather (1 set of spare paddling clothes and a small towel, as well as warm clothes if the weather is cool)

  • Sunscreen and hat. If you wear glasses please have a strap to ensure you do not lose them in the event of a tip.

  • Lunch and snacks

  • It is best if paddlers have a single bag to hold all their belongings.

  • A typical day will have paddlers experience kayaks, canoes, and a land activity session with the majority of the time on the water.

Due to the need to be on schedule, late arrivals and mid-activity departures may not be possible as coaches cannot leave the group on water to drop off or pick up paddlers. Please do your best to arrive on time. If your paddler has an appointment in the morning or afternoon, please do your drop off or pick up between 12:00 pm and 1:00 pm (lunch break).

Please do not hesitate to contact us if you have any questions or concerns. We aim to respond to emails within 24 hours if not sooner. Email coaches at: l2p@calgarycanoeclub.com. If you have any questions or concerns during day camp hours, please email calgarycanoeclubinfo@gmail.com and one of our managers will get back to you.

Thanks for your attention and we look forward to meeting you,

AJ and Leah
