BECOMING BELOVED COMMUNITY - SCHOOLS

OPENING DOORS THROUGH MUSIC AND MENTORING
SUMMER 2021

Dear Friends,

Doors are opening for our neighborhood children thanks to you and so many like-minded and generous friends who understand that people like us can change the lives of so many children.

We are living out the mission of Becoming Beloved Community-Schools (BBC-Schools) which is to establish a long-term advocacy for social justice rooted in “Love Your Neighbor” by supporting the education and well-being of our most vulnerable children in our two neighborhood schools, Dunbar School in Glen Ellen and Kenwood School in Kenwood.

Having greatly expanded the library collections of DEI (diversity, equity and inclusion), in both schools and the science, arts and general sections as well as provided every child with their own library bin of books for home at Dunbar, we now have the opportunity to join with Vivo Youth Orchestra to bring instrumental music to the children at Dunbar. To date, the children at Dunbar do not have access to this outstanding opportunity to create instrumental music because of location and funding.

Vivo Youth Orchestra can come to Dunbar! We have already raised some of the seed money to start this program and we have applied to the Episcopal Diocese of Northern California for a matching grant of $10,000 to purchase the instruments. We have also joined a coalition of organizations advocating for arts education in Sonoma Valley including Dunbar and just recently met with the new superintendent for the district to advocate for this instrumental opportunity at Dunbar. The responses are very positive. The time is now for a community effort to help Dunbar School become a model of how lives can be changed through music!

Please CLICK to see the attached brochure and how you can become a partner in opening doors through music!! We can do this! We can provide the instruments for the children at Dunbar so that they can create orchestral music and experience the joy of making music in community!

With gratitude,
Laurie Boone Hogen
