Welcome to the July 2021 newsletter

Phew! It's been hot! Thankfully there has been a bit of a break in the weather but it shows how even here in Tayport climate change is affecting us already...

We have have lots growing in the Community Garden, Forest Garden and Fruit Tree Walk. Our produce stall is back on, plus we've launched our new veg subscription boxes so you can enjoy some of this lovely fresh grown veg. Pop along to our next 'PLANT to Plate' session for tips on what to do with this season's bounty.

The summer holidays are in full swing and we have a few regular activities here at the garden for kids and young ones to have fun, get some fresh air and learn about nature. For grown ups, our 'Host Your Own Evening with Climate' continue so you can learn how to run your own climate party with friends to learn what you can do and get people talking.

Here at PLANT we're busy at ever. We're getting the programme together for the Tayport Climate Festival, as well as planning more events for you and of course working away in the garden.

We hope you enjoy this issue and remember further details about all the events and new stuff as it comes are available on our website and our Facebook page, or Instagram.

Garden Update: Sun, Harvest and lots of Tatties!

The long hot dry spell recently has been lovely for people but now the plants, especially the vegetables, need water so the rain has been very welcome. In the garden we have been harvesting lots of veggies and the now the produce stall is in full swing and very popular.

You can read Peter and Kirsty’s blog update about the Garden on the PLANT blog here.

We have a good crop of early potatoes and are saving some of each variety for our ’Taste our Tattie Fest’ on Sunday 29th August 2021 at 1pm. Come along and try some! For more info email Ali at volunteer@tayportgarden.org

We are looking for Harvest Helpers to pick veggies and people to help with the stall, no experience is required just a friendly face and enthusiasm!

Thirsty Trees and Abundant Berries on the Fruit Tree Walk

The apple trees are in good shape and have set a huge amount of fruit despite late frosts, strong winds at blossom time and a lot of very hot dry weather. The plums are suffering a bit from drought and aphids, with not a lot of crop this year.

The soft fruit bushes around the Garvie Brae play park are giving us an abundant supply of blackcurrants, redcurrants, whitecurrants, red and green gooseberries and alpine strawberries. It’s lovely to see people pick and use them. They’re tasty, full of vitamins and minerals, organically grown, local with no food miles and free. Berries can be made into jam, curd, pies or frozen for those winter smoothies.

Our volunteers have recently taken a lot of nettles and cherry suckers out from the wildflower border which is looking great and buzzing with bees. It will soon be time to summer prune the apple trees and any necessary pruning of the soft fruit.

Can you do us a favour?
Please can anyone who lives near the trees throw an occasional bucket of water around their nearest tree, it’s been very dry and this would help the apples to swell up nice and juicy!

If you have a bit more time... the fruit tree walk is looked after by volunteers and we always need more. If this could be you, come along and say hello, or contact Ali on volunteer@tayportgarden.org

Community stories

  • We have two wonder-plant profiles from the Forest Garden:
    • Janice wrote about the Ceanothus and its power to support pollinators and improve the soil. Read her full post here.
    • Jan inspects the Valerian known for its medicinal uses - and a possible connection to the Pied Piper of Hamlin! Read Jan’s full post here
  • Inspired by #NoMowMay Emma's family gets lost in the long grass for the summer... and she shares their adventures and how they are learning more about her rewilded lawn. Read Emma’s full post here.
Do you have a story to share?

Podcasts: Stories and Food Elephants

As promised, this month we have a double shot of the listening pleasure for you:
  • Storytelling in the Garden with Owen Pilgrim. We hear from Owen about how telling stories can better connect us to each other, ourselves and to the landscapes around us. To finish up Owen tells the wonderful ‘Village of Pots’ story. Listen here.
  • Tayport Community Fridge - tackling food waste one elephant at a time. We hear from the lovely people who set up the Fridge at the Larick, how it’s working out and plans for the future. Listen here.

Final call for contributions to Tayport Climate Festival

Last Tuesday, festival organisers hosted an open meeting for all current and potential Tayport community contributors to the Festival. We took some time to reflect why everyone thought it was important to do something about climate crisis here and now in Tayport:

If we really are going to overcome the catastrophes that face us, action has to be taken on every level, from international down to local. I don't think any of us here has much international clout, so we need to act on our own local level. Mark, PLANT Comittee and Taycoasters

Helping people to feel empowered to know that they can make change - no matter how small they feel it is - it makes a huge difference, collectively. Laura, St Andrews Environmental Network

My reason is sat on my lap - this is Bella and she going to have an awesome future because I'm saving the world one plastic item at a time. Nicola, Clean Soaps

It has been a great pleasure to meet everyone who made it on the day, and to work with all the amazing contributors who have put forward their events and market stalls to be included in the Programme so far. There is still time to get your events and stalls included, with the following deadlines for new submissions: We are also looking for people who may be able to help in the run up to the festival on 24-26 September, by joining our organising group or putting a few hours in to help with marketing/social media. If you are interested and have some time to spare, get in touch on tayportclimatefest@gmail.com.

As of today, you can get all your Festival updates on Instagram as well as Facebook.
