The coolest place to be

25th July 2021
Dear WKC

As the temperature dial rocketed on and in the water was quite literally the coolest place to be.  Another great turnout for this week's Monday evening time trials saw members young and more mature challenge themselves over 500m. Great progress across the board with a number of PB's being recorded.

With racing in mind, have you ever thought about joining #TeamWey and supporting the club's bid to retain its inter-club sprint title, the MacGregor Paddle at the September National Sprint Regatta in Nottingham? Well you should and Pete Gorman is here to tell you why.

Look out below for the extra Junior Beginners and Improvers sessions running during the school holidays, in addition to the Paddlesport Camps.

We spotlight our Wey Wonder Women this week, a great band of women who have combined their love of kayaking with laughter, friendship and a bit of racing! They are incredibly welcoming and if interested don't hesitate to contact Carol.

Enjoy the water and sunshine!

What's on

Join the MacGregor Paddle Team

Wey Kayak Club are the current holders of The MacGregor Paddle identifying us as the top sprint racing club in the country, and it would be great if we could win it again this year at the 4th-5th September Regatta at Nottingham.

We score points for each competitor we enter, and then our best 9 K1 results, 6 best K2s and 3 best K4 results. We also score point for C1, and C2.

This is a great club event - traditionally we have been the loudest and most visible club, and long may that continue,

If you have not raced at Nottingham before you will need be to registered and this must be completed before Sunday 15th August and then entries need to be in by Friday 20th August.

Please let your coaches or Pete Gorman (Sprint Team Lead) know of your interest so that Pete Gorman (Sprint Team Leader) can complete the registrations and entries in good time

Happy racing!

Wey Wonder Women

You don’t need a special outfit to join in with this women’s group.  There is a varied age range with women in their 20’s, 30’s, 40’s, 50’s and beyond.   We all come from different places and backgrounds and all somehow have ended up all being in Surrey at the same time being Wey Wonder Women!

Our abilities range from fairly new at the sport, to those who have paddled for years.  We tend to paddle in small groups when available, around work and home commitments.   At present we communicate via WhatsApp.  Most own their own boat which makes for flexibility of paddling times, some use club boats at the range of times during the week that the boats/coaches are available.   Some of us go to races and earn points for the club, racing is not for everyone but for those who do it’s a challenge for yourself and the social side is good too.

Perhaps you are thinking, how did all these people get into paddling?  Well, some got involved through their husband or children being members, one saw kayakers on the river and found the club and is still paddling 10 years on.   One bought a house next door the club!  Others have more exciting stories to tell – One of our WeyWonderwomen moved to Australia, bought a bashed up touring kayak, joined a club in Perth and chose any house because it was near the river… or perhaps you have ambitions like another member -who describes her kayaking debut as stemming from a desire to do the famous Coast to Coast Multisport race across the South Island of New Zealand when she turned 30.

Maybe you’ve tried kayaking in the Scouts or Guides and want to do more.  It’s really soothing to be floating on the water, calming to be doing rhythmical strokes and great to be with nature, seeing a different perspective of your town and having a chat with likeminded people.
