Wey Wonder Women
You don’t need a special outfit to join in with this women’s group. There is a varied age range with women in their 20’s, 30’s, 40’s, 50’s and beyond. We all come from different places and backgrounds and all somehow have ended up all being in Surrey at the same time being Wey Wonder Women!
Our abilities range from fairly new at the sport, to those who have paddled for years. We tend to paddle in small groups when available, around work and home commitments. At present we communicate via WhatsApp. Most own their own boat which makes for flexibility of paddling times, some use club boats at the range of times during the week that the boats/coaches are available. Some of us go to races and earn points for the club, racing is not for everyone but for those who do it’s a challenge for yourself and the social side is good too.
Perhaps you are thinking, how did all these people get into paddling? Well, some got involved through their husband or children being members, one saw kayakers on the river and found the club and is still paddling 10 years on. One bought a house next door the club! Others have more exciting stories to tell – One of our WeyWonderwomen moved to Australia, bought a bashed up touring kayak, joined a club in Perth and chose any house because it was near the river… or perhaps you have ambitions like another member -who describes her kayaking debut as stemming from a desire to do the famous Coast to Coast Multisport race across the South Island of New Zealand when she turned 30.
Maybe you’ve tried kayaking in the Scouts or Guides and want to do more. It’s really soothing to be floating on the water, calming to be doing rhythmical strokes and great to be with nature, seeing a different perspective of your town and having a chat with likeminded people.
