Disabled Students UK shortlisted for the Disability Power 100 2021

We are thrilled to be recognised for our work to bring about real change for Disabled Students. We celebrate the decision by the Shaw Trust to include organisations this year as it emphasises the power of disabled communities, especially during a year when many disabled people have faced enormous adversity and have really had to pull together.

What we have been able to achieve in one year, during a pandemic nonetheless, is a true testament to disability wisdom and adaptability. Our report on the impact of the pandemic was mentioned in parliament, we have spoken at the APPG for disability and consulted with some of the major bodies in the sector.

Our Story

Disabled Students UK was founded following a 2020 report looking into disability discrimination at a London University that was spread to students at other universities, eliciting recognition and an acknowledgement that we can make real change if we work together. We currently have over 400 students from 60 different UK universities, at all levels of studies, from all parts of the UK and with many other intersecting identities.

Recent Activity

Over the past month we have been keeping busy sharing, collaborating and supporting the promotion of our cause and mission. We have been continuing our networking and continue to build networks across the sector to ensure we are truly embedded within the sector in which we are seeking to influence. To this end, our Directors have recently presented at the largest online Student Union Professional Conference, Coventry University’s SU21 as well as continuing our work with consultants from the Oxford Saïd Business School’s Liber Project.

Research Update

One of the ways we strive to achieve change is through utilising robust and evidence backed research and data. To fulfil this aim we run a range of activities including information campaigns to raise awareness of issues of accessibility in higher education among the general public and in targeted demographics such as students, parents and families, and university staff as well as conducting our own research initiatives, one of them being the University Accessibility Comparison Project.

Have you heard about The University Accessibility Comparison Project?

The University Accessibility Comparison Project aims to compare universities based on measures of accessibility. We want to be able to use the data collected to provide both current and prospective disabled students as well as Universities, and Higher Education organisations a true view of their accessibility and what practical steps could serve to improve them by sharing and learning from best practice from across the country.

We are currently in the process of designing the survey for this project to collect views and experiences directly from disabled students as well as Student Unions. We also host monthly meetings for disabled researchers within HE accessibility. To find out more about the project, please check out the video below.

The University Accessibility Comparison Project

Could you or your organisation offer us support in helping us deliver our vision for the University Accessibility Comparison Project?

We are keen to make this project as collaborative as possible both with our students/researchers as well independent organisations and those working within the Higher Education sector.

We are keen to collaborate with organisations and individuals that could help us boost our skillsets, or offer funding, support in kind, mentorship or training and development opportunities. If this sounds like something that you could do or if you want to find out more about how you could potentially get involved with our work, please get in touch with our Founding and Interim Research Director, Mette Westander via email on: Mette@disabledstudents.co.uk
