Updates from our team

Self-Defence Classes
Ethnic Women Wahine Toa

During July we were able to offer three self-defence classes, thanks to Mel and the Women's Self Defence Network - Wahine Toa. We learnt practical steps to get out of dangerous situations. We also had intriguing discussions around keeping safe, preventing violence and de-escalating dangerous situations.
More than anything they were fun and active sessions that leave feeling empowered and confident!!

We are planning for a few more classes at the end of the year. So if you are keen to join send us an expression of interest.

Sexual Violence Support Services for Ethnic People around Aotearoa
Shama supports survivors of family violence and sexual violence. Long-term therapeutic support is one of the services we provide, and is subcontracted by ACC’s Integrated Services for Sensitive Claim.

Shama’s Response to Sexual Violence Team has a structured system to help our ethnic survivors. Most ethnically diverse communities have different views on family violence and/or sexual violence. Some communities have a different understanding of act of violence compared to current New Zealand law. These gaps are part of the struggle we must address to support the wellbeing of our communities to live in this country. Our team is well aware of these issues and has taken up the role of ethnic community advocate for many years.

Shama has developed trainings to close the gap in service in mainstream organisations on Cultural Safety and follow up programmes on prevention.

Overall, we support mainstream organisations by being aware of different approaches needed for ethnically diverse communities and by informing them when they need cultural perspective and ongoing support.

On the intervention side, Shama's nationwide ethnically diverse professionals’ network continues to develop our resources and sharing spaces for new therapists and support their professional development.

There are four regional network meetings held regularly supported by Shama. The Christchurch ethnically diverse therapists network meeting is one of them. The Shama team took the photo below at the Christchurch network meeting at their second meeting on the 9th July at Rarakau, Riccarton Community Centre.

At the meeting, we shared our personal and professional journey and connected to support each other. The Annual Professional Development Hui will be on 28th to 30th October at the Waitetuna Retreat Centre.

Why volunteering with us?

Ashley, a student volunteer for children's holiday programme commented on her experience.

"Volunteering at Shama's Children Holiday Programme was a very fulfilling experience! It was very heartwarming and fun to get to know the lovely kids one by one and help them spend their holidays discovering, creating and honing their talents. All of us volunteers are endlessly grateful for Shama's patience and guidance and for this opportunity to serve our local community. 👍🏼👍🏼"
Ashley
