1. U.S. bishops again urge House members to restore Hyde to spending bill
(CNS) — The House Committee on Appropriations is poised to mark up “the most extreme pro-abortion appropriations bill we have seen” because it excludes the 46-year-old Hyde Amendment and other long-standing bipartisan provisions that prevent tax money from being spent on abortion, two U.S. bishops’ committee chairmen said July 13.

If the Labor, Health and Human Services, Education and Related Agencies appropriations bill is marked up as is, it is “effectively mandating health care professionals to participate in abortion, and forcing American citizens to pay for abortion with their tax dollars,” said Cardinal Timothy M. Dolan of New York and Archbishop Joseph F. Naumann of Kansas City, Kansas.

The cardinal is chairman of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops’ Committee for Religious Liberty and Archbishop Naumann is chairman of the USCCB’s Committee on Pro-Life Activities.
“By eliminating the Hyde Amendment, and other Hyde-like policies, the financial fruits of Americans’ labor would advance the destruction of the smallest, most vulnerable humans,” they said in a joint statement. MORE

2. Aborted Baby Found Tossed in Clinic Trash, Infant’s Body Mangled From Dismemberment Abortion

(LifeNews) - An Ohio abortion facility denied any wrong-doing this week after pro-life advocates said they found a second-trimester aborted baby, hazardous medical waste and patients’ personal information in the trash outside the building. Sherri Lynn Grossman, administrator of the Northeast Ohio Women’s Center in Cuyahoga Falls, told the Akron Beacon Journal that they follow “strict” disposal procedures, and they did not violate the law. “Absolutely not — absolutely not,” she said of the allegations. “We have very strict policies and procedures in place.” Grossman told the newspaper that they are conducting their own investigation into the matter, but she refused to comment further. On Wednesday, state pro-life leaders asked authorities to investigate after they said pro-life volunteers found a second-trimester aborted baby’s body in the trash in June outside the Cuyahoga Falls abortion facility. 3. Coalition of 20 states files brief supporting South Carolina’s blocked ‘heartbeat law’

(LiveAction) - Twenty states, led by Alabama, are standing with South Carolina after a federal judge blocked the state’s ‘heartbeat law’ from taking effect. Together, they have filed an amicus brief supporting South Carolina’s appeal of the ruling, arguing that the judge’s decision was “an error-filled district court opinion.” In February, South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster signed the Fetal Heartbeat and Protection from Abortion Act into law. The law requires abortionists to provide an ultrasound for the mother, and if the preborn child’s heartbeat is detected, abortion is prohibited. The human heart begins to beat between 16 and 22 days post-fertilization. A doctor who commits abortions after the preborn child’s heartbeat is detectable could face a felony charge, fines, and jail time. The law includes an exception for cases of a medical emergency, though the intentional killing of a preborn child is never medically necessary, and also has additional exceptions for rape, incest, and fetal diagnoses. MORE

4. More abortion restrictions enacted in 2021 than any year since Roe v. Wade

(LiveAction) - According to a new report from the pro-abortion Guttmacher Institute, more abortion restrictions have been enacted in 2021 than in any other year since Roe v. Wade legalized abortion in the U.S. in 1973. Ninety abortion restrictions have been put in place in 2021, surpassing the previous record of 89 back in 2011. Polling shows that while most Americans support the idea of keeping abortion legal, they also believe it should be heavily restricted. As Live Action News previously reported: While the abortion industry has claimed that 7 in 10 Americans support legal abortion (unrestricted and on demand), polling has consistently found that while Americans want abortion to remain legal, they also want it heavily restricted. Almost 70% of people want abortion limited to the first trimester. Common-sense restrictions, like parental consent, waiting periods, and informed consent before undergoing an abortion, also receive widespread support. Just 7% of Americans support completely unrestricted, taxpayer-funded abortion. MORE

5. Assisted suicide researchers want suicide devices for people with dementia.
(EPC) – Just as you thought the assisted suicide lobby has gone too far, long-time assisted suicide lobby leader and researcher, Margaret Pabst Battin opens the debate for developing a suicide device for people with dementia. The Hastings Center Report published an article (May 2021) by Margaret Pabst Battin and Brent M Kious titled: Ending One's Life in Advance. (Link to the article). Battin has studied and promoted euthanasia and assisted suicide since the 1980's. Battin is the same philosopher who argues that assisted suicide is not a suicide. Her new article concerns the following question: People newly diagnosed with progressive dementia may not want to live through its later stages, but the options for those who wish to choose an earlier death are inadequate and can be dependent on others’ cooperation. What if, while still competent, these people could opt for implantation of a device that would achieve their goals—timed to release a painless, fatal drug at a future point they have selected? Families strengthen around 'prayer' fire

(Legatus) - Fr. Patrick Peyton (1909-92), known for leading hundreds of large rosary rallies over the course of his life, famously declared that “the family that prays together, stays together.” Statistics demonstrate that both the strength of the family and practice of the Catholic faith have been in decline since his time, making it even more important today that Catholic families put Fr. Peyton’s advice into practice in a way that is enduring and effective.

Evangelist and author Kathleen Beckman described prayer as “the oxygen of the soul,” and recommends family prayer because “it brings together spouses and children in a spirit of love to raise hearts to God.” Praying vocal prayers together “solidifies communion with one another and with God. When family members pray from the heart for specific intentions, they establish a bond of trust, faith deepens, hope ignites, and love grows.” MORE

What does a 15-week-old human being in the womb look like?
(LiveAction) – The Supreme Court has agreed to take up the case of Mississippi’s 15-week restriction on abortion. The law states that 15 weeks was chosen as the time limit for two main reasons: The most commonly used form of abortion in the second trimester is the D&E abortion procedure, also known as dismemberment abortion. A D&E abortion is violent and involves tearing the arms and legs off of a baby before crushing her skull. It is inhumane, and according to recent research, by or even before the end of the first trimester, preborn children are likely to feel pain. MORE
