Gotta look good for the cameras.
Hi Fellow Athlete,

Undoubtedly the most exciting thing that happened in the world of triathlon in the past week was the Tri Battle when Jan Frodeno (predictably) beat Lionel Sanders in a full distance triathlon.

I don’t think anybody was under any illusion that Lionel had a chance, but I think everybody loved his fighting spirit and insatiable hunger.

And that part of him shaving in the PTO documentary.

But to be honest, I thought he’d blow up on the run, as he often does.

I thought he’d really overdo his power on the bike.

It seemed to me that he was happy with his result, a PB for him, and before the race he had said he’d be happy if he pushed Jan to a world record, which he did: 7:27:53.
You can own this NFT for around $6k

In another first, you can have a Tri Battle NFT, and the bidding is at about US $6k now.

The reserve hasn’t been met and it doesn’t even look like anybody has bid, so it’s not quite as dear as the Beeple NFT (that sold for $69.3 million).

For close to the same amount of money as the Tri Battle NFT I’d probably rather buy the new (second) Ironman Breitling watch, that I noticed they immediately strapped onto Jan’s wrist after he crossed the finish line, after removing his Wahoo.

But probably not. For $4k, is a bit much for a quartz watch, even if it is a Breitling.

Tough sell.

Now, if you somehow missed the battle, you can watch it all right here

The Best Bike Upgrade

If competitive cycling and triathlon are new to you, the world of bike equipment can be daunting and beginners are always asking if they should buy a new bike or if they should upgrade.

But one of the most overlooked upgrades is one of the least-sexy: The power meter.

Tip #23 explains why you should use a power meter.

Vintage Tri Mags up for Grabs

Somebody in Indiana, USA, named Kim Googled "triathlon" and then found IronmanHacks.

She wrote in saying she had tons of old triathlon magazines she'd like to get rid of, and sent me this picture.
They are Triathlete, Triathlon and Tri-Athlete magazines going all the way back to 1984.

I'm pretty tempted to grab them but I really don't have the space.

It would be a pity to have them trashed.

Email me here if you're interested and I'll get you in touch with Kim.

In Case You Missed It

Mark gave us a good overview of his main nutrition and diet rules that he's lived by.

It's just four of them, and they're simple.

You likely know the name Lachlan Morton, the guy that rode the Tour de France solo, unsupported, and mostly in Birkenstocks. Great article on this amazing feat in Outside Magazine.

Want to watch tris at the Olympics? Here’s howCredit: Gerald Manceau

After Gerald send me that I found another piece on how to watch the tris in the Olympics, this time from Triathlete.com.

Then Gerald sent me an article asking who the fastest runners in triathlon at the Olympics are.

Anti-sex carboard beds at the Olympics?

“If Lionel wins Kona, I’ll match his prize money,” Chris McCormack said.

Struggle to run in there morning? Here are 10 steps to consistent early morning runs. But they forgot the most effective tip: Run with a friend.

This is trippy. I wonder if Tripp, “the fitness solution for your inner self” could help athletes recover or prepare for races.

Favero has been a favorite power meter brand for many, me included, and they just came out with a version compatible with Shimano pedal bodies.

Just down the road (ok, within long-run distance) Shimano wants to set up a new $179 million factory here in Singapore.

SIS launches Beta. Looks like lots of science and numbers behind it but I’m not sold. Let’s hope they taste better than their Nitrate line.

Like Beyond’s fake beef? Get ready for their chicken.

But as Gerald tells me, the fake meats are no healthier.

Peloton with an in-app game where you do what? I think I’ll stick to Zwift.
