Dear Rotarians and Friends,

There is a very famous quote that “this too shall pass”.  Never have those words been more appropriate or true.  They embody hope and the wisdom that nothing good or bad lasts forever. I feel that this current lockdown has been the most challenging period for many both professionally and personally.   It has become difficult to identify the line between work and leisure. Now we seek comfort in the end of the day not by going home but by changing rooms.

The financial and emotional toll of extended lockdowns is very real, but we are in this together. Knowing you are not alone in the way you feel or the challenges you face, has been a positive shift in mindset.

The month of July has passed very quickly, and we are already in the month August.  I am glad to see that our weekly Zoom meetings has been well attended and member engagement has been high. It was good to hear again from Cathy Booth from Umoja Orphanage Kenya and the wonderful work she is doing in that part of the world.  What an inspirational story and for me the takeaway was the sustainable practices that she has incorporated into the project to ensure the community can be self-sustaining after the initial help given to the community.

The first speaker for the month of August was our own member, Brooke Bannister. Her life journey from a Rotary youth exchange student from her hometown of Ontario Canada to being a Lane Cove resident today.  Brooke is a travel spirit, and I am glad that she has chosen Australia as her home base and has become a newly inducted member of our Club.  Thank you, Brooke, for that awesome and detailed presentation that we all thoroughly enjoyed listening to.

The Olympics has provided a much-needed distraction from the current situation that we find ourselves in.  As I write this, Australia ranks fourth on the medal tally with 17 gold, 6 silver and 19 bronze and many history making moments.  I am just wondering what it would be like to be living next door to Logan Martin and seeing him riding high in the air in the Aussie backyard where normally hills hoist is home……..!

The Rotary changeover dinner is off the cards now and we are now using the deposit towards a Christmas function on Friday November 26 at Roseville Golf Club and will incorporate some changeover formalities into it. Fingers crossed.

The six-monthly dues were sent out by Treasurer Tania last week with an optional Centurion donation.  The good news is that the dues have remained the same with no increase. Please make our Treasurer’s life easier by paying your dues on time.

A big thanks to member donations towards the RC of Granville Humanitarian work providing meals to those most affected by COVID in the south and south-west of Sydney this month.  Shows the great work that Rotary does in the community and the cross functional partnerships where there are no barriers to geographical boundaries.  Till then, keep safe.

Our member Brooke Bannister gave us an outstanding presentation on her journey from Canada over Europe and eventually Australia. Brooke was selected as an Exchange Student from Canada to Belgium in 1977 which instilled in her an interest in other languages and cultures. After having experienced North America, Europe, South America and Asia has settled in Sydney since 2008. We are proud to count Brooke as a Lane Cove Rotarian who is also our club's Director of Youth Services.
August is Membership and Club Development Month
and a special message from RI President Shekhar Mehta.

"Everyone who engages with Rotary — no matter who they are, where they are in the world, or how long they have been connected with Rotary — should feel valued, respected, and welcomed. These ideals reflect what current and prospective members want and expect from their Rotary experience: respect, ethical leadership, inclusion, and the opportunity to work together to create more just, open, and welcoming communities for all people. Diversity has long been one of Rotary's core values and continues to serve as a foundation for how we interact with each other and our communities".

'Umoja Orphanage, Kenya'. Cathy Booth, a Rotarian with the Bundaberg Sunrise Rotary Club gave a dynamic virtual presentation on her achievement in establishing her ambitious "Umojahome" project in Kenya from the ground up. The project commenced in 2011 with the assistance of many Rotary Volunteers and it is a work in progress. The project caters not only cares for orphans, it also raises cows, goats and chickens. Additionally the main income provider ire the Safari Tours they have established. Our member Melody Gonyora congratulated Cathy on her great talk and personal achievement.

Question answered: what is ESRAG?

The acronym stands for Environmental Sustainability Rotary Action Group (ESRAG) to inspire and empower the Rotary Family with extensive expertise, networks, education and best practices to implement sustainable and impactful environmental projects.  These projects promote environmental sustainability, awareness of climate change, and actions to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and to mitigate climate disruption. We see a world where people unite and take action to protect the environment for a sustainable future.
