News

Taigh Sgoile na Drochaide are so pleased to welcome their first teacher - Emily MacDonald. And aren't we fortunate to have such an experienced, caring and intentional individual to lead the charge with our first crop of youngsters!

Emily MacDonald | Eamag ni’n Rabairt 'ic Eachainn 'ic Eachainn Nìll Lodaidh (pictured here with Gaelic mentor Anna MacKinnon), is as rooted as one can be in Gleann nam Màgan | Glen of the Frogs (Ainslie Glen), Inverness County, with a MacKinnon and MacLellan heritage going back to the Island of Muck and Morar. She was drawn in her youth to Gàidhlig language and culture and has taken advantage of every opportunity to explore, learn and share. She has a Celtic Studies and Bachelor of Education Degree from St. Francis Xavier University and has focused on community-based education. A hard-working, well-organized self starter, Emily began the Na Gaisgich Òga youth program at Colaisde na Gàidhlig, has developed and led Gàidhlig Early Years programming and regularly mentors learners. She most recently has worked as a ban-chleasaiche at Highland Village. Emily enjoys visiting and speaking Gàidhlig with elders, especially along with her children, Archie and Rosie. She is delighted to begin her new role as teacher at Taigh Sgoile na Drochaide.
A vital part of the ethos behind Taigh Sgoile na Drochaide is incorporating community, both the local community of central Inverness County, as well as the wider Gaelic Community of Nova Scotia in how we teach our youth and build with them what it means to be a Gael.

We hope that the Gaelic community will be just as excited to help this long time dream become a sustainable reality through donating to the school. Financial donations can be made HERE through the Community Foundation of Nova Scotia. All donations are eligible for charitable receipts.

If you'd like to help in other ways, we are seeking materials suitable for a primary classroom - games, cards, recreational materials, craft supplies, paper, outdoor equipment, etc. We'd be so happy to hear from you - please get in touch HERE
Speak Gaelic will be launching in a few weeks! You can sign up on their site HERE for updates.

Gaelic Community Interviews

Tapadh leibh for the interview Dawn!

Over the summer, we will be conducting interviews with different members of the Nova Scotia Gaelic Community. We will be sharing these interviews in each edition of FIOS, so stay tuned to read about other members of the community.

Gàidheil air Adhart Fund | The Gaels Forward Fund

Comhairle na Gàidhlig is pleased to award a Gàidheil air Adhart grants to Còmhlan Filmeadairean Gàidhlig na h-Albann Nuaidh!

Còmhlan Filmeadairean Gàidhlig na h-Albann Nuaidh is a new organization formed to help support the development of individual Gaelic filmmakers in Nova Scotia and advocate on behalf of/grow the Nova Scotia Gaelic film community as a whole. They plan on achieving this by offering networking and educational support to filmmakers through regular meetings and workshops, by resource sharing, promoting their members’ work, and by offering a united voice for Nova Scotia Gaelic filmmakers. Their goal is to support those already making Nova Scotia Gaelic films and to undertake significant outreach activities to increase their number. This will always be done in an inclusive, welcoming manner that centres the Gaelic language in the films they are involved with, and looks for collaboration in both the wider Gaelic, and wider film communities in the province.

Thanks to a Gàidheil air Adhart grant, Còmhlan Filmeadairean Gàidhlig na h-Albann Nuaidh (Gaelic Filmmakers' Society of Nova Scotia) is registering as a society, has started board meetings, and is in the process of planning a series of online filmmaking workshops and a weekend filmmaking program for later in the year. They will have more information and a website in the coming weeks and look forward to welcoming new members.

Over the past few weeks, we have been sharing different Gàidheil air Adhart recipients on our Social Media pages. To view the posts, please visit our Facebook page HERE

This three-day online course offers anyone with an interest in Scotland’s unique cultural heritage – including visual artists, writers, musicians, budding-folklorists and creative educators – an opportunity to learn more about the online resource, why the material was collected and by whom, and how and why it is of value today.

Participants will be introduced to some of the many important tradition bearers whose recordings populate the archives and be given the tools to explore the material with greater efficiency and understanding.

The course will be in English but will discuss themes intrinsically linked to Gaelic, Scots and English, including examples of local dialects preserved in some of the recordings.

The course will be delivered by leading scholars and creative practitioners who have extensive experience with the material, including Dr Mairi McFadyen, Raghnaid Sandilands who will help participants explore the potential of the online resource through various lenses, including local creativity, cultural ecology and environmental awareness.
