‘HEAD’ Lines
Goodbye, Hello and Thank you
Dear Parents/Carers
As we come to the end of an academic year unlike any other, I would like to use my final ‘HEAD’ Lines of the academic year to publicly say some goodbye’s and let you know about staff joining us in September.
Mr Taylor (the Technology one!) is retiring after 25 years at John Hanson. I am sure you will join me in thanking him for what he has done for generations of John Hanson Students.
Mr Durman leaves us to take up a teaching post in China. In his 17 years at John Hanson he has provided students with amazing creative inspiration.
After 5 years at John Hanson, Mrs Neale is leaving us to continue pursuing her writing career.
Mr Bryant is taking well-earned retirement. Throughout his 12 years at John Hanson, so many students have benefitted from his support in the classroom and his support for extra-curricular sports clubs and fixtures.
Mrs Clothier will also be saying goodbye to John Hanson after 8 years, in which so many students have benefitted from her care and support.
While her time at John Hanson has been brief, I would like to thank Mrs Carter for her support for those students at John Hanson who need a little extra help in the classroom.
We also have some staff joining us in September.
Mrs Tuliva joins us as our new Head of Technology.
Miss Bacon joins the English department after completing her teacher training at John Hanson and Mr Doyle is joining the Maths department.
Mrs Randall is joining us as teacher of Dance and Performing Arts and Mr Vergara will be joining the Computing Faculty.
Miss Coster joins our Pastoral Support Team, while Mrs Kidd will take up a post of Cover Supervisor and Mrs Norris will be joining our Technology Support Team.
Two of our established staff are taking up new roles in September.
Mrs North and Mrs Solman will be joining the Senior Leadership Team as Associate Assistant Headteachers.
Finally, I would like to thank you for your continued support of your children and the school.
Enjoy the summer break with your children. We look forward to seeing them in September for what I hope, will be a much more ‘normal’ school year.
Regards
Russell Stevens

Our very own cycling Superstar!
Throughout the year Rebecca Carter in year 9 has been attending the National Youth Track Omniums. This is a series of events all over the UK.
Each rider gain points in each event, which will be added together to determine whether you can take part in the final in Lee Valley, London (the top 24 in the UK get an invite).
Rebecca attended 4 omniums:
Portsmouth – where she came 3rd
Carmarthen – where she came 4th
Reading – where she came 2rd
Bournemouth where she came 1st
Overall this put her as joint 5th in the UK which earnt her a well-deserved space in the final.
The final took place on Sunday 18th July. Unfortunately, Rebecca crashed out but she still came 11th, which is an unbelievable achievement.
While attending these events she also raced in road and circuit racing: Winchester, Guildford, a 2-day event in Kent, Loughborough and Redbridge to name a few.
Well done Rebecca. Team JH are very proud of you!
Cyber Ambassadors
This term our team of 15, Year 7 Cyber Ambassadors have been selected (pictured below) and have received their first day of training from Bekki; our Cyber Ambassador Coordinator who works for the Police & Crime Commissioner. The students are keen to become a friendly and helpful face around the school.
The role of the Cyber Ambassadors is to educate and assist students in keeping themselves safe online. We are currently planning our activities for the next academic year so watch this space…
Charity Fundraising
I am currently in Year 7. I have just recorded a cover of my favourite song ‘Drivers Licence’ to raise money for two charities that are very close to my heart. I have always loved singing and found solace in singing whilst watching my mum and granny both battle breast cancer at the same time.
The song is available on iTunes for £0.79 with all the proceeds being donated to Breast Cancer Research and the Willow Foundation. Please purchase the track if you can and help me support these two amazing charities, by supporting these charities together we can make a huge difference to people’s lives. Ellie George 7SCR
Careers fair: 6th October 2021
Our annual Andover Area Careers Fair is returning on 6th October 2021 - if your place of work would like to come along for day (from 8:30am-3pm) to showcase what they do and the career prospects available for our young people then please get in contact with Mrs Hall, on anna.hall@jhanson.hants.sch.uk as we are always looking to broaden the offer. We want as many companies from various career sectors to be there. The best thing about our careers fair is that your company only has to give up one day, and will see approx. 6oo year 11 students over the day as we host it for all of the Andover and surrounding area Secondary schools.
Apprenticeship Opportunity at Orvis for Current Year 11s
2 apprenticeships available within Orvis's distribution centre. The apprentice will attain an NVQ Level 2 in Warehousing with a specialism.
There are some specific specialist skills offered as training which would be to either work in our personalisation area, learning embroidering logos and name on our dog beds and tailoring our trousers and would suit somebody with an interest in sewing. And the second to work in our repair area, learning how to repair graphite fly-fishing rods, fly-fishing reels and other products, so an interest in engineering or mending/repairing would be advantageous.
If you are interested email Mrs Pope so she can forward you the contact details.

We will have Doctors and current medical students covering the application timeline, work experience, entrance exams and everything they need to hit the ground running in September. An event timetable can be found on the Google registration link below.
Event name: Medicine Application Timeline - Getting Ready
Location: Online
Date: 21st August 2021
Ages: Current year 11 (going into year 12 in September)
This is a FREE event and booked on a first come first serve basis.
Please encourage your son/daughter to use their SCHOOL EMAIL for work rather than their own private email. This is important for safeguarding and also some of our messages for students are being sent to school email addresses.
Please see below for the ‘Word of the Week’. These words have specifically been chosen as they are both useful and sophisticated whilst encouraging challenge and extended vocabulary use. Please challenge your child (and yourself!) to use this week’s word as much as possible at home, in conversations, and in their work!
