What a YEAR this has been!
NBCC’s impact for children and families this past year could be summed up in just three powerful words: Resilience, Adaptability, and Innovation.

When the COVID-19 crisis began in early 2020, NBCC took a leadership role in responding to the shelter-in-place orders and subsequent challenges brought on by the pandemic that exacerbated the childcare crisis gripping our community along with the rest of the nation.

Like many other organizations, we had to significantly modify our operations to meet the CDC’ and public health department’s safety guidelines. Our teams quickly adapted their programs across 15 locations, ensuring that our community’s essential workers had access to childcare and that their children were given the support they needed to continue to thrive.

This year we were presented with a strategic opportunity to take our Garden of Eatin’ program to the next level and reach more children by developing a curriculum product to be used by other childcare providers. In the process, we discovered that this new way of implementing garden and nutrition education also met a need for increased structured outdoor learning opportunities.

All of this and more would not have been possible without the support of our business community, school partnerships, and the financial support of our donors. Although we do not know what the next year will bring, we are committed to responding to the current needs of the community, investing in our early childhood education workforce and ensuring the best start for children in their most critical and formative years of development.

Here is a snapshot of what we have done over the last year:
Summer Fun
C Street preschoolers received a visit from musical group Bread and Roses this month! Children sang songs in Spanish and English, shook rhythm eggs, and played with brightly colored scarves. They had so much fun, several children presented performer Eric Rubin with flowers from the C Street garden at the end!
Steele Lane preschoolers have been very interested in exploring knowledge about lizards this month, and they had an extra special opportunity to meet two chameleons during Spirit Week! One of the visiting chameleons is blind in one eye, which gave the class an opportunity to learn about disability and inclusion. The children can’t wait to see their new friends again!
This summer is a hot one. Cool down and enjoy the fruit of the season with a delicious watermelon lime slushie!
