Underwater Technology Gives Rise to American History

Pay-Per-HAP Episode #52

Dear <<First Name>>,

Thank you for joining History At Play, LLC the weekend of Friday July 23rd, when Pay-Per-HAP screened an award-winning documentary, Partnership Runs Deep. Directed and produced by David Bellino; written by Duncan B. Putney; and featuring J. Kalaora as American Loyalist Mary Gould Almy. Kalaora and Putney offered an insightful discussion and post-program Q&A into the making of the film, which originally aired on Rhode Island's NBC affiliate, and was featured at the Smithsonian, as a collaborative production, sponsored by the United States Navy and NOAA (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration).

Partnership Runs Deep lead viewers on the maritime search for underwater wreckage in Narragansett Bay, namely the remains of two British vessels that were scuttled and sunk during the American War for Independence. The frigate HMS Cerberus and transport fleet HMS Lark have been submerged in the waters off the coast of Newport since the Battle of Rhode Island in August 1778. Both ships were intentionally sunk to avoid capture by the French Navy, which had aligned with the American Colonists' efforts to overthrow British rule. The captains of these vessels, though court-martialed, were ultimately exonerated, as the British Royal Navy was ordered not to permit their ships, nor the weaponry/powder on board, to fall into enemy hands. The remains of the vessels, along with the identification of other shipwrecks, spanning the 19th & 20th Centuries, were discovered in the 1970s, thanks to state-of-the-art autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs).

Kalaora portrayed and voiced Mary Gould Almy, a Quaker Loyalist, who witnessed the Battle of Rhode Island, while her husband, who had pledged allegiance to the patriot cause, was battling British forces. Through historic vignettes, viewers shared in the uncertainty and terror of Newport residents, witnessing the British Siege of Rhode Island, and the ensuing naval battle.
