We would like to thank the Irish population for their ongoing kindness, generosity and patience towards the healthcare sector during these extremely trying times over the last year.

Join us! Cycle Royal Canal Greenway to Mullingar

On 7th August, IDE members will be taking to our saddles and demonstrating the benefits of active transport by cycling 90km from the Convention Centre to Mullingar, along the Royal Canal Greenway.

Funds raised will be going towards administrative and running costs of IDE, allowing us to continue to promote and advocate for planetary health education and initiatives. Any donations would be hugely appreciated - click here for further donation & info.

If you are interested in joining us on this cycle, please sign up via this form https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSeDqIUnbeY7SRlgEZwl7PEtgAOq_qikBDt-eQLjdeAO1EgNXw/viewform. There are options to cycle shorter lengths of the Greenway, with regular access to trains back to Dublin.

IDE Go Fund Me Donation

25th of August 2021

Irish Doctors for the Environment will host our annual AGM on Wednesday the 25th August 2021. We will confirm details of the event closer to the time, but hope to be able to meet in person as well as hosting over zoom. If you have been a member of IDE or just want to learn more about the group and how you can be involved, please come along and get involved! At our AGM we will discuss our work and achievements over the past year, as well as vote on the positions for committee chairs and working groups.

Please check out our website for a description on these roles. IDE has grown in strength and numbers since we began in 2018, and we would love to see this to continue to expand!

HOW TO APPLY FOR A POSITION?

If you are interested in a position, feel free to emailirishdocsenv@ide.ie for more information or to give us a heads up. If you want to know more about a particular role or speak to a current chair, you can find our contact details on the website and at https://www.ide.ie/working-groups

PROCEDURE FOR AGM

Each position will opened to the floor for people to go into the running, another member to second and if there is more than one person for each position we will get each candidate to say a few words about why they want the position and then we will vote via zoom poll.

What if I cannot attend via Zoom or physically but I would like to run for a position?

Please email irishdocsenv@ide.ie with details of the position you would like to run for, why you would like to run for the position and what you would bring to the committee. A member of the committee will read out your email as a candidate for the position. We will then vote via zoom for the position.

Feedback from new member -
"Irish Doctors for the Environment is a wonderful organisation to be a part of. It is a very positive organisation advocating and implementing change that will benefit the health of all. COVID-19 has changed the way we see medicine and systems- based health, and despite the challenges of the past year, IDE’s dedicated members have had an impressively productive year."

IDE have sent the above letter to RTE, which has gained traction on social media and struck a nerve with many other who may have been feeling similar regarding poor coverage of the climate crisis from taxpayer - funded national broadcaster.

Considering this week, President Micheal Higgins signed The Climate Action and Low Carbon Development (Amendment) Bill 2021 gained little coverage. The Bill, which passed the Dail & Seanad, is now signed into law that Ireland must uphold the Paris Agreement and move towards net zero, throughout every industry.

IDE were mentioned in a reflective opinion piece in Irish Times from David Robbins who concluded "As a headline on a report for the Harvard journalism research institute, the Nieman Foundation, put it: “If you’re not a climate reporter yet, you will be.”
With a focus on clinical practice and the reality of health professionals, the course is designed to introduce family doctors and other primary health care professionals and students, to the topic of Planetary Health; and to inspire and guide them to educate others or become advocates in various ways.

The registration period is from May 5th 2021 to December 19, 2021 and there is NO CHARGE for registration.

IDE Podcast was launched across Spotify to great success!
We would like to thank Dr Paul Behrens for the latest episode, which truly feels like a walk through nature.

If you are new to the work of IDE, we encourage you to listen to the introductory podcast and begin thinking about environment and health in your own space, finding a community that will encourage you to explore these links deeper and continue working on committing individually, nationally and internationally to supporting climate action.

In this episode Callum takes a stroll through the forests of west Clare with Matt Smith and Ray Ó Foghlú from the Hometree Charity. Hometree is about land regeneration and connecting people to the process. They plant trees when it’s the right thing to do and have an expert team of advisors who guide them in the right direction. Their core value is stewardship.

Through education and supporting increased awareness and consideration of Ireland’s natural environment, they hope to nourish a new way of relating to nature conservation and rehabilitation.

Together they explore a hidden temperate rainforest and a Sitka spruce plantation in Clare. We discuss regenerative forestry, woodland conservation, connecting with nature, engaging the community, bringing farmers and landowners on board, how to help land return to native forests and their vision of the future of Irelands forests.

"To walk through a forest uncharacteristically barren of snow in wintertime, or through a hospital ward dominated by older and chronically ill patients, is to witness two of the greatest challenges of our time: the degradation of the Earth’s ecosystems and the shift in human disease towards that driven by our lifestyles and our surroundings. Both challenges are inseparable: climate change, ecosystem destruction, massive losses in biodiversity, a warming ocean, soil degradation, and pollution are wreaking havoc on our planet and sickening us."
