If you could read our minds . . .

What a dark and scary tale our thoughts would tell. Pick up a book instead! Monday, August 9, is National Book Lover's Day. If you're short on time or attenti – squirrel! – you should check out the August summer reading issue of O.Henry magazine, filled with short stories by celebrated N.C. authors. And if the only reading you do this week is this newsletter, we won't judge you because this shizz is snatched.

Forward this to your favorite book nerd.

SPONSORED BY THE ORIGINAL GREENSBORO FARMERS MARKET

Who you callin' short stack?

Move over, cream. Peaches have a new OTP: pancakes. On Saturday, August 7, at 8 a.m., the Original Greensboro Farmers Market kicks off their Annual Peach Celebration, which provides funds for market hunger relief programs. Chefs Alex and Tim Amoroso of Cheesecakes by Alex will be stacking up their light and fluffy flapjacks with peach compote and all the fixings, while Jack Gorham tickles the ivories and croons juicy tunes. And if you like a little something on the side – peach, please – Neese's sausage and bacon are available. Fuzz, yeah!

Hoop, there it is

If your only experience of the Harlem Globetrotters has been through syndicated 1970s episodes of Scooby-Doo, now's your chance to catch the magic and mastery in person. On Friday, August 6, bounce on over to the Greensboro Coliseum for a night of balling like you've never seen. Zoinks!

Walk this way

On Wednesday, August 4, from 6:30-8 p.m., join Preservation Greensboro for a Social Equity in History Walking Tour'Cause when it's all for one, it's one for all. (Thank you for that poignant song, Bryan Adams.)

Our love language is sarcasm

Heather Land, known for her sarcasm and Southern charm, brings her Age Gap Tour to the Greensboro Coliseum on Friday, August 6, at 7:30 p.m. We haven't met this snarky comedienne yet, but we've already ordered the BFF necklaces. She had us at Unfiltered.

Who run the world? Trolls!

This week, Spartan Cinema at LeBauer park presents Trolls World Tour on Friday night. While we can't stand trolls of the internet variety, we are here for the cute, colorful and coiffured.

Walk, walk, fashion baby

If you've got a shop you're looking to stock with the latest wholesale – because no one wants a halfsale – in fashion, jewelry and accessories, check out the Greensboro Importers & Wholesalers Jewelry & Accessories Expo this weekend. This show will have you bedazzled.

Picnic blankets and covers

Tonight at 6 pm, cruise on over to Jamestown for Music in the Park with AM rOdeO. This duo, comprised of Evan Olson and Jessica Mashburn, will perform acoustic originals as well as covers you know and love. Every time we see them live, we note that they just keep getting So Much Better.

First of all . . .

August has blazed its way into town and that means First Friday will be in full effect this weekend. Here's what you can look forward to – in addition to uncomfortable silences heat.

  • Turn the beat around with First Friday Drum Circle at Center City Park from 6:30-9 p.m.. No experience or instrument? No problem. We're not players, we just drum a lot.
  • Looking for somewhere to Gogh to be inspired? From 6-9 p.m., stroll through First Friday Art Park, where local artisans will share demos and hands-on projects. We're all for anything that's handsy.
  • First Friday Market at SouthEnd Brewing brings all the makers to the yard, and their crafts are better than yours. Shop cool stuff, sip frosty brews, nibble food truck goodies and enjoy live music from 5-10 p.m. Beer right there!
  • Where else but Elsewhere? The First Friday of each month brings new artworks and participatory activities to Greensboro's museum of oddities and intricacies. Oooh, think we just found the title of our memoir!
  • From 6-9 p.m., the Greensboro Cultural Center's five galleries will each feature brand new exhibitions. Plus, there will be live music, kids' activities and raffle prizes. No idea what the prizes are yet, but we're hoping they're well-cultured – like pearls. Or yogurt.

Rock your body til 9 p.m.

Friday nights in August got the glow up! Kontoor presents live music on Lewis Street, kicking off the grand opening of the brand-new Lee + Wrangler Hometown Studio with the tunes of JT & Jukebox Rehab. No, not that JT. We're talking J Timber. But he's guaranteed to bring SexyBack with his soulful grooves.

Not yo' mama's Blues Traveler

Greensboro's free Sunday summer concert series, MUSEP, returns to live shows this weekend. On August 8, Uber over to the White Oak Amphitheatre for a 6 p.m. show with Cory Luetjen & the Traveling Blues Band, followed by Sweet Dreams at 7 p.m. Head home for an 8:30 bedtime and more sweet dreams. That's our kind of wild night.

Barning down the house

This Saturday, August 7, The Barn Dinner Theatre kicks off its latest show, The Color Purple, which will run through September 25. There's nothing we love more than being entertained while stuffing our faces "all-you-can-eat" style. #lifegoals.

Feelin' The Sting of summer heat rash

Get On Up from your own couch and head to the Carolina Theatre where the Summer Film Fest rolls on this week. Their weekly line-up will leave you Spellbound. Have we dropped enough hints? We're Notorious for being tricky like that. P.S. Don't forget about their weekly kids club to get you in the Spirit.

Still, we rise at noon

On Thursday, August 5, at 12 p.m., the Reynolda House is giving us a virtual sneak peek into an exhibit coming in early 2022. Still I Rise: The Black Experience at Reynolda will take a look at the lives of Black men and women, including nationally renowned artists, who helped shape the Jim Crow-era estate into the non-profit American art museum we know it as today.

Sing it from the rooftops

On Saturday, August 7, Evan Olson performs at One Thirteen Brewhouse + Rooftop Bar, combining his DJ and acoustic skills for a show that's sure to raise the roof.

OMG Becky, look at her putt

Drinking games > golf. Change our minds. On Saturday, August 7, from 2-7 p.m., fill up your score card at Otis & Wawa's Par 3 Golf Bar Crawl. You'll play a 9-hole – aka bar – course with a bonus 19th. We're just here for the fore play.

PHOTO VIA FLEET PLUMMER

We gonna need more candles

The 1920s were roaring extra hard when Leo season graced Greensboro with another August lion, Charlie Plummer, who went on to found Fleet-Plummer, our local shop for all things entertaining. Join us in wishing Mr. Plummer a happy 95th birthday on Saturday, August 7. We're just here for the cake – and gelato, which they now have in store!

We're with the band

Tonight at 6 p.m., join Cindy Barbour for a mini-band workout on the Greenway. FYI, a mini-band is a stretchy piece of workout equipment and not a musical brood of child prodigies. Sadly, we can't make it because we have mini-band practice.

How convenient

Our August book club pick is here: Convenience Store Woman by Sayaka Murata. This novel by one of Japan's most talented contemporary young writers tells the story of Keiko, an awkward young woman who's never quite fit in (Oh gosh, is it about us?) – until she finds her place and purpose working at a convenience store. (OK, not us, but sounds relatable!)

Felt salty, might delete later

We leave you today with an invitation to celebrate August 3: National Grab Some Nuts Day. Whether you like 'em toasted, honey roasted or creamed into butter and spread on crackers, we hope you take the chance to truly honor this day and give it the full, glorious nut-grabbing it deserves. Cashew next week!
