Many of us have been working towards this gig for months - such is the goodwill surrounding Donald. There'll be a cast of dozens onstage, including Donald's band Fools Errand that I play recorder, glock and percussion in, alongside Eugenie Costello (violin), Tom Adeney (guitar) and Eugene Gilfedder, who will be tomorrow's MC. Donald's cross-strung harp protégé Nicole Tate has taken up the role of harpist. Sadly COVID travel restrictions have prevented the amazing Annie Lee from being able to honour her beloved Donald onstage with us.
For decades Donald 'held court' in his home, in his generous, compassionate and idiosyncratic way for a constellation of Brisbane artists. Some of the most delectable, hilarious and juicy conversations and music-making I've been part of occurred in his Mozartean-styled music room.
Originally a cellist, and one of the first music therapists in Queensland, Donald went on to work as a theatre musician, composing, performing and teaching in this field. In more recent years, Donald was a Stairwell Project musician from the get-go, playing harp bi-weekly, humbly humanising the clinical shopping mall vibe of the RBWH foyer with his naturalness and grace.
The gig will be recorded and a video will be produced. I will be sure to share it here with you here in due course. And if you read this in time and want to attend in person, remember ticket sales end around lunchtime today -
In the deep sweet sadness and gratitude,
Lynette |
