Senior Executive report

NAIDOC Week Celebrations and Our RBSC Day of Learning

“Country is inherent to our identity. It sustains our lives in every aspect - spiritually, physically, emotionally, socially, and culturally. It is more than a place. When we talk about Country it is spoken of like a person. Country is family, kin, law, knowledge, ceremony, traditions, and language. For Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples it has been this way since the dawn of time.”

This year's NAIDOC Week theme is 'Heal Country!'. Healing Country means finally resolving many of the outstanding injustices which impact on the lives of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. It is our responsibility, as Australians, to create opportunities for reform based on a fundamental change in the relationship Australia has with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

The Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Team at Rose Bay Secondary College carefully organised meaningful NAIDOC Week celebrations to suit the nature of remote learning. Our students engaged in our ‘Day of Learning’ program, in which their timetabled lessons focused on the history, culture and achievements of First Nations peoples from the perspective of that subject. We designed a website for our celebrations that included information about this year’s NAIDOC Week theme, detailed and engaging lesson plans, virtual events and key websites. To start our Day of Learning, we put together a virtual NAIDOC Week assembly video which incorporated heartfelt messages from our students and teachers about the importance of recognising and celebrating the rich culture, history and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. Indigenous Australians come from an ancient, spiritual and culturally rich civilisation and should be celebrated as such.

NAIDOC Week is an important opportunity for all Australians to recognise that: Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples are the traditional owners of this land; Indigenous Australian history is ancient and one of the oldest surviving cultures in the world; Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples culture is important to the identity of Australia as a country; and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples and their culture should be recognised and celebrated.

Heal Country, heal our nation.

Stay COVID Safe!

This week our school has seen an increase in students attending school. I want to remind all our families that there is minimal supervision on site at our school for those students who cannot be educated at home, for example if their parent or carer is an essential worker. All students and families will be supported with learning from home materials and resources. If you are working from home, and your child is able to be educated from home, please keep them at home. I want to thank all the families who have continued to support our community by keeping their children at home to minimise movement in the community. Get in touch with your teacher to discuss any additional needs for your child or family to support you to continue learning from home

Year 12 Timeline for Term 3

We have emailed all parents and students with the Department of Education advice re HSC students and our plans for Term 3. There will be a Zoom meeting with Year 12 parent on Monday 2 August at 9:00 am. Contact the school if you did not receive this information. Please find below a summary of our plans. Year 8 and 10 Parent Teacher Zoom Meetings

Our teachers are looking forward to connecting with you and your child on Tuesday for progress meetings on Zoom. You will have already received an email with instructions for booking. As staff may need to be in zoom meetings for 4 hours after their day of teaching I wanted to let you know that I have asked staff to deliver content on Tuesday but only conduct a live lesson in Period one for the purpose of marking daily attendance. I am sure you will agree with me that we have to take care of our teachers and that a possible 10 hours in online meetings is too much to ask of them on Tuesday.

Wellbeing is a big focus for us during Learning from Home

Our Year Advisors are doing a wonderful job connecting with their year groups online in Teams, setting numerous challenges and keeping our students connected.

IEF celebrate NAIDOC week

The IEF Celebrated the culture and history of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and NAIDOC Week, at the Rose Bay, Day of Learning. In our dance class with Gabriela Green we had a special guest, Warren Foster. Warren is Aboriginal dancer and dance teacher, he said that, he had been dancing his whole life. The IEF students were led in a Traditional Dance that honours the emu, eagle and the brolga. We were very grateful to have this rich and rewarding opportunity.

Farewell from Ms Efthimiou

Today I farewell Rose Bay Secondary College after 14 years as the Teacher Librarian and while it is a sad farewell for me – saying goodbye to amazing colleagues and most importantly, the wonderful young adults I teach and share time within the library, I leave them knowing how resilient, resourceful and caring they are towards one another in our library spaces and now in our remote learning spaces.

Having taught all of Year 7 this year I am extremely proud of how they have embraced learning with interactive technologies. I recently received the news that Rose Bay Secondary College students are the third most engaged users in Australia of the Sora app for reading online! When we return to onsite learning students will find many new books, new release titles, HSC study guides and the latest manga which is hugely popular with students of all ages. Lockdown’s timing was terrible for our avid print readers! A huge thank you to our team of monitors who provide school service covering our resources so promptly to get the books on the shelves.

I am grateful for the generous library fund contributions our parents and carers have provided over the years which has enabled Rose Bay to have an exceptionally current, vibrant and varied collection of physical and digital resources to support student learning, their recreational interests contributing to enriching and inspiring the whole student.

I would like to wish all of our Rose Bay Secondary College community all the very best in the future, stay safe and Ms McLelland will be continuing in her role as Teacher Librarian and primary library contact supporting our staff and students. I thank her, the Library Assistants: Ms Gallagher and Ms Hoare and Mr Cotterell for all their dedication to ensuring the library is a welcoming, inclusive, reading rich, technologically reliable, student centred environment for all users.  For library resources click here
