HISTORIC PROPERTY & CULTURAL NEWS

My sympathies for all who were in harm's way and for the losses they've sustained. I pray for a speedy recovery from Hurricane Ida and its aftermath. Protected by the original shutters covering my windows and doors, I stayed in my New Orleans French Quarter home safely. While New Orleans was spared a direct hit, I remain an advocate for historic homes: their sturdy construction and the architectural integrity represented in these homes below.
My best to you,
Peter

Canemount is located high on the Loess Bluffs of Claiborne County near the Mississippi River. These hills have a deep and fertile top soil with a very high component of cherry bark and oak in the timber stands.

SHOOT TRAP

On your own Amateur Trapshooting Association registered trap range.

The range has an automated Promatic ATA Double Wobble 600 machine located in an underground concrete bunker. The 5 concrete shoot stations are controlled by 5 speakers thus, all you do is say pull and shoot!

In a totally private setting, this property offers the owner the ability to walk outside and hunt trophy whitetail deer, Russian boar or turkey. Importantly, the property is surrounded by Canemount WMA.

Canemount owners have worked with MDWFP biologists through the Deer Management Assistance Program (DMAP) since 1991 to facilitate quality deer management.

Peter introduced my husband and I to a gorgeous property for sale on Marais Street, showed us around, and provided every resource we needed as we considered it. Not only was he so very knowledgable about the area, the particular block, the home's architecture and historic details, etcetera — his charisma, warmth and approachability led to us meeting several of the neighbors during our tour, who were generous and helpful.

Sidenote:
We subscribe to Peter's real estate newsletter full of breathtaking historic homes throughout the region and it's a real treat.  ~

SEEING RODNEY
A Ghost Town Along The Mississippi
Once the busiest port along the Mississippi river between
New Orleans & St. Louis, you'll now find the ruins and remains of Rodney.

Rodney Baptist Church
dates from 1850.

Due to repeated floods, it's in
a precarious state.

Across the street and
slightly higher on a hill,
stands
Rodney Presbyterian Church
Dating from 1832, with a Union canon ball lodged above the top middle window and a security camera placed in the lower middle window, Rodney Presbyterian stands guarded. While preservationists have been at work, more support is needed to stabilize the structure.

and a bit about boundaries....
* Yes, I knew when I said we were exploring the southern-most tip of the delta, I was entering murky waters:
as geographical boundaries, of where the "Delta" starts & stops, are
highly contested!
And to focus on that definition is tertiary to the purpose of this foray: to experience the history-steeped area surrounding Canemount,

PORCH SIPPING AT DUNLEITH
I rounded up a group of friends to visit Natchez: to experience some of the beauty and deliciousness the town offers during peak Crepe Myrtle bloom season. We were greeted warmly by Natchez friends!

Saturday's Explorations Included:
A Historic City Cemetery
Guided Walking Tour
(on grounds established in 1822),
Seeing Master Gardener Friends at the Natchez Farmers Market.
The produce, baked goods and plants are fantastic!
We also love its new location along the river.
We toured Choctaw Hall, built around 1836. It's a phenomenal property,  and it's a highly recommended bed & breakfast.
Then, we enjoyed a delightful boozy brunch at the new Little Easy Cafe (we loved it so much we went back Sunday morning!
While I showed a client a few homes downtown, our group enjoyed taking the Bloom Drive* & and engaging in a Sip & See Tour* of the Downtown area.

* Three self-guided Natchez Celebrates the Blooms tours are available - read on  for more details.
Art by Esther Carpenter

We reconvened at Beau DesHotel's new Arts District Studio for the Flora & Fauna Show & visited with the talented artists!

Afterwards we enjoyed viewing the grounds at Monmouth Historic Inn and their celebrated bar for pre-dinner drinks.  I want to return to see this wisteria-covered arbor in bloom. What lovely gardens!
Monmouth Historic Inn also has a fine dining restaurant.

We enjoyed dinner at the Kitchen Bistro Saturday evening.

On Sunday, we were treated to a walking tour of the oldest part of the downtown - originally settled by the Spanish. A passing horse drawn carriage sets the mood.
Though a torrential rain came down during part of the walk led by my friend and historian Jefferson Mansell, we loved the experience. The architecture, blooms and camaraderie were beyond compare.
After the walk, Jeff invited us back to his house for coffee and treats. It was a wonderful time learning more about the history of Natchez. The experience was further heightened by our our Crepe Myrtle Archivist & Historian, and retired Master Gardener, Elaine Gemmell's homemade Fig Cake!
While your Natchez stay might not include Elaine's divine fig creation, you can always take solace, and magnificently so, in the Milk Punch served at the Little Easy Cafe!  And about Milk Punch, we like ours with a shot of espresso!

Before leaving Natchez, we took another turn about the historic downtown area overlooking the majestic River and paid respects to the Champion Crepe Myrtle at Bontura.

WE ❤️ NATCHEZ!
There's so much more to discover...
I wish we had stayed longer. We'll return soon with friends!

THE BACKGROUND:
Why I Founded the Natchez International Crepe Myrtle Festival
I'm a longtime fan of the architecture and genuine hospitality Natchez offers. But in July of 2018, I was completely caught off-guard. I was stunned by the intense array of blooms! So I asked around to understand how this happened,  and a  planned effort came clear.  In addition to the ongoing commitment of its citizenry, Sallie Ballard, the architect of 2000 for 2000, funded planting of well over 2000 crepe myrtles for the millennium!  (SEE MORE ON MY BLOG)
