“I told you I was gonna die out here on the streets.”
One of our long-time regulars said this to me at Street Life the other night.
I won't share his name because that might damage his dignity, but he'd been working hard the last few years to get off the streets. Finally, he was offered an apartment. On his way to sign the lease, he got arrested on an old, outstanding warrant.
A few days later he was released, but the apartment was no longer available. So he went back to his old homeless campsite, only to find that his tent had been robbed, and everything he owned was gone.
With no possessions and nowhere else to go, he came to Street Life and told us what happened.
We are in the business of encouraging people and offering hope. And it broke our hearts to see our friend so let down.
