What an amazing week. Lots of Food Club Hosting interest. Wonderful to see Food Club Hub grow to 300 Members in it's 6 clubs. I am so excited about the possibility of Food Clubs appearing as far out as Knysna and George. Please do keep us in mind if you know of anyone around the country who you think would make a good Host.
QUICK MARKET NOTES:

Apothecary are now offering R5 on their returnable glassware - all of their jars, which they reuse. If you haven't already, you need to try their face moisturisers - which are amazing. Their deodourants are brilliant - both Luke and I use them and have done so for years and we smell SO good.

Boschoek. We are adding their organic avocados this month. These are avocados that are grown without any copper spray, interplanted with fruit trees for diversity. We will still keep the non organic avos up.

Ciao Ciao's passata is locally grown tomatoes - lasts on your shelf for 6 months and is delicious (made with basil and salt, that's it).

Metro have included organic naartjies and minneolas this week!

Oh Oat. We love them and their beautiful new returnable bottles. While I love their wine bottle concept, it was found that the milk only lasted a short period in them, and second hand wine bottles were not as durable as they would have liked. Their new bottles are more like the old school milk bottles, and still warrant a R5 rebate if you return them in tact.

Outcast falafel. See pic above - they are so good and have been hit hard by Covid. I want to make sure they stay afloat - so please stock up. Their mixes are super easy to make a delicious homemade falafel.

Truly Good. We ordered a lot of these last month and their wraps have been a saviour for lunches for kids and for me. Sometimes we just don't want more sandwiches and it's amazing to think they are made from vegetables.

Schekter's Raw. I am including their delicious burgers on the site this month. Move over Beyond Burger - here's your local version, with no weird preservatives and additives. IT's so flipping delicious. Burgers back on the menu in this house.

GreenFish.  As with last month, I will get on the whatsapp with you as soon as I have fish availability on Monday 23rd of August. There's no point booking ahead now, since availability really does change. I think those of you who bought fish last month will agree, they were delicious.

Komati. I have, at your request, added a whole host of spices from Komati in 100g refill packs. They are not organic, or all local, but they are non irradiated. Almost all spices on the market, unless specifically stated as “non-irradiated” have undergone a process of ionized radiation in order to increase shelf life and kill any possible bacteria existing on the herb or spice.  While this may sound good at first glance, most of the valuable, even medicinal, qualities are purged.  This leaves the consumer with a degenerated food product, and may even contain carcinogenic chemicals as a by product.

THE RAW COLLECTIVE

These guys are amazing. I have sampled all of them. The crackers are delicious - more for adults. The Fudges and Cheesecakes are next level delicious and the breakfast bars and bombs are perfect lunchbox solutions. The deal is she will deliver for free for over R1000. It is all refined sugar and gluten free and when you look at comparables in this sector, her pricing is very reasonable. I am going to give her a chance this month, instead of Thank Goodness. I want to let her have her moment to shine.

Synthetic Nitrogen - Can't live without it, Can't live with it.

The wheat plants in this picture were planted with nitrogen fertiliser applied below the seed and then an organic fertiliser was added on the surface.  There is a clear line at the level of the seed, you can see that below where the synthetic nitrogen was applied no association between the soil and the root has taken place.  Above the seed you can see a healthy rhizosheath.  Credit: Dr Christine Jones.

Without doubt the elephant in the room when discussing the environmental costs of food production is nitrogen.  The so called Green Revolution was triggered by the ability to convert atmospheric nitrogen into a usable form for agricultural production.  But there is nothing green about it.  There is a massive environmental cost associated with this nitrogen production and use and like many environmental issues much of that costs cost is externalised, kicked down the road to be dealt with another day.  Synthetic nitrogen in South Africa has enabled us to grow food production to keep up with the world’s burgeoning population but it is simultaneously ensuring that we will not be able to carry on producing food at the rate we need to.  If you would like to learn more about this, please read the full blog entry here.
