District Director Update August 2021

Hello fellow Toastmasters,

Club Success
With already one month down, it has been a very busy time for the District with the Club Officer Training. We had a reasonably good response. From experience, clubs that have had most or all the Club Executive attend, and have taken their new learnings and applied it to the club environment, then go on to further DCP successes. Congratulations to all the members who have attended.

Contests
The District Executive listened to the membership in determining the contest format for Area, Division and District - it has been set for face-to-face contests. Please note that clubs can have face to face, online, or hybrid contests. The club winners can then represent the club at the Area Contest. If the winner is unavailable for the Area face-to-face contest, then the runner-up is offered the opportunity.

Semi-annual dues
Coming up very soon will be club semi-annual dues. Could club treasurers please start advising your membership that the semi annuals will be required in the next month? Please also make sure that your club speech champions are in good standing as they progress.

Awards
I was pleasantly surprised by the number of members who have submitted awards. At this stage Eimaan Hamid is ahead of the pack with ten awards submitted. Well done, Eimaan, for setting a high standard so early.

Have you got at least three awards in you? This year I would like to see a record number of awards registered. This is the challenge, I will watch the progress each month. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact any of your District team.

Proxy votes
The International convention is coming up this month and many requests and reminders have been sent out to Club Presidents and Secretaries. As of this morning we still have 57 clubs that have not determined if they will vote or assign their proxy vote to the District Director or another Toastmaster in good standing. If you need guidance to assign the proxy vote, please follow this link.

It is the club’s prerogative to vote if they wish. We as a trio have interviewed all the international candidates and strongly believe that the votes assigned to us will be (1) assigned to those who the clubs have requested, or (2) the best candidate for the benefit of D112, which may be the same person. Our District has potentially 316 votes.

Time is running out for assigning your votes. If you are voting on your clubs’ behalf, you will need to complete the following:

1. Between August 17 and August 20, log in to the Toastmasters International website and go to the “My Profile” page. Click on the I Intend to Vote button on the “View Proxy Information” page, which will start the Credentials registration process.
If you do not complete the Credentials process mentioned above by August 20 at 11:59 p.m. Eastern Daylight Time (UTC -4), you will not be able to vote.
2. Attend one of the trainings on how to complete and cast your electronic ballot. Training information will be available on the “Annual Business Meeting (ABM)” page of the website during the week of the Toastmasters Virtual Convention.
3. Starting on August 26, 2021, log in to the Toastmasters International website and go to the “My Profile” page to access your electronic ballot.

New Area Director appointed

Finally, we have made a new appointment in Area M3, Graham Gunn who is no stranger to many of you. We look forward to working with him in our progression this year.

Have a great August.

Regards,

Stephen Budai, DTM

Club Growth Director Update August 2021

Happenings
  1. On Tuesday 3rd of August, Division L Director Suzy Elks and Toastmaster Robert Hela hosted a Demo Meeting at RNZAF Base Whenuapai. We were invited in by the Pacifica group there. Well done to the team from West Harbour Toastmasters Club for getting us to this point. The atmosphere was electric, with attendance by District Director Stephen Budai and myself providing a double-team of Vision and Detail. We look forward to this new venture chartering quickly.
  2. Your Trio have been busy interviewing International Officer & Director candidates. After a rigorous ½ hour meeting each for 15 candidates, and equally rigorous discussion afterwards, we have informed opinions about who we think would best represent the interests of Toastmasters New Zealand North District 112. Presidents, or Secretaries, I hope you have given your proxy vote to District Director Stephen Budai DTM for this decision.

New Club Coach Appointments
Appointment Club Coach(es)
2 July  Arawa Richard Perkins
10 July Pakuranga Kulesh de Silva
Michelle Reading
4 August Kawerau Ann-Marie Andrews
5 August Eastland Helen Hunt

Congratulations to these clubs for the bravery to reach out for District support. Thank you to the volunteer coaches who are willing to invest their time into them. This is a win-win situation. Clubs gain an outsider point of view but remain in control of how to implement any suggestions. Coaches, by exercising their skill and tact, demonstrate leadership as they work their way towards their Distinguished Toastmaster Award.

Smedley Award Challenge
Can your club add 5 new, dual or reinstated members between 1 August and 30 September? All clubs achieving this goal will receive a Smedley Award ribbon from headquarters. The club from New Zealand North District 112 with the highest number of new members added during August – September 2021 will also be awarded a set of Club Officer pins during our District Award Ceremony of 2022.  (In case of a draw, the club that achieves this goal the soonest will be the winner.)

A note from the Public Relations Manager

Dear <<First Name>>,

Why be a brand manager?
As a member, you are a brand manager of Toastmasters, especially if you are the Vice President of Public Relations.

What is your favourite brand other than Toastmasters? Do you have a favourite sport team or car? Will you trust that it’s the real deal when the logo suddenly looks different? When they don’t use the known brand colours? Neither will potential members of your club. Orange might be the new black, but it isn’t a Toastmasters brand colour. Customers will walk by when they are looking for a specific brand and it looks dodgy. So will potential members scroll past your posts when you use colours or logos they don’t recognise. And people who want to improve their public speaking won’t be as inspired by cute puppies as you might think. (Note: I absolutely adore puppies.) They are serious about the skills they want to gain to grow their careers, and so should we be.

The role and responsibilities of the Vice President of Public Relations include:
▪ Creating materials (such as press releases, content for social media, fliers and newsletters) that promote your club to your local community and beyond.
▪ Updating the club website and posting club activities on social media sites.
▪ Safeguarding the Toastmasters brand. How will you do this? The updated brand manual and “Let the World Know” are valuable resources.

Serving as VPPR provides you with an opportunity to learn and practice communication and leadership skills while helping your fellow members and club. We’ll provide tips and share success stories during this year.

Thank you

A special thanks to Rob Wightman DTM, this year's newsletter coordinator, and Toni Sharp DTM, our much-appreciated proofreader, for their help in producing a quality monthly newsletter.

For more information, you are welcome to contact me, the Public Relations Manager. You can currently only reach me via email. From 5 September, you should be able to reach me by phone again.
