Coffs United crowned Premier

Coffs City United was awarded the Premier's Plate Saturday in a dramatic afternoon as the entire state plunged into lockdown.

Thirty minutes before kick-off at 3 pm on Saturday, all five CPL matches were postponed, allowing people already at venues sufficient time to get home.

Although there remains a full round and several postponed fixtures to play, Coffs United is in an unassailable position at the top of the table.

Undefeated in 2021, Coffs United is on 44 points, 12 points clear of second-placed Coffs Coast Tigers.

The Premier’s Plate goes to the team that finished top of the table following the completion of the regular season. A final series and grand final are scheduled for September.

Football Mid-North Coast Chairman, Mike Parsons, handed over the Premier's Plate to Coffs United for the second year in a row before players and spectators headed home on Saturday afternoon.

The lockdown is in force until Saturday midnight. CPL administrators will announce the revised match schedule mid-week.

General comment
It feels really good. I think being consistent over the year is a massive goal of ours that we've we've ticked off again. Disappointing about today and the game being postponed or cancelled, not really sure, it's a bit of an unknown but we were looking forward to the battle today. But, yeah, extremely happy for the guys. You know it's a big effort and we've been training since January and so it's a good result.

The reasons for success?
I think it's the buy in from the players that they want to come to training, they want to play as well as they can and at the highest level they can. I think it showed this year with the FFA Cup, you know how far we went there. You know it makes my job a lot easier to coach when the guys want to turn up for training. That's probably one of the biggest things .

What was different this year?
I think the level lifted from last year to this year. I think the competition is really well run. I think the guys wanted to go all the way again. We'll just see what happens over the next few weeks.

How can you win the grand final this year (having won the premiership last year but losing the grand final)? What did you learn from last year?
Just probably taking chances when they're available. You know you can be consistent all through the year but in Australian sport you can remember who wins the grand final but, like Mike said, you know it's a major premiership because we have to be strong all during the year. So, yeah hopefully we can get to that point.

Reason for success
Definitely just the hard work. All the lads definitely turn up every week and it's pretty surprising to have I think let's say 30 or 30 or even more sometimes every week, week in week out. Everyone's putting in and definitely that's what it comes down to.

Can you win the grand final?
Yeah definitely there's always a possibility I suppose. The other four teams or the five teams, six teams that are actually in there are starting to play good footy especially at the end of the season when you need to. I suppose all the boys now if we get a break we'll enjoy a week or so break but yeah definitely it'll be a good final series if it actually goes ahead.

How do you feel about having a week off?
I suppose still got to catch up I suppose these two games if we do which is probably ideal for leading into the semis. You don't really want to go in there without playing lots of footy. I suppose you can get a bit complacent but (we’ll) see what happens and just take it as it comes.

Can you go one better this year (and win the grand final)?
I definitely hope so, especially playing on the stadium, it kind of suits our style of footy. Everyone loves to play there and i think the boys are more hungry compared to what happened last year and we want to try and show everyone how good a team we actually are.
