Hello, Sparkin’ STEM family! We hope you enjoyed your summer holiday, finally taking a well-deserved break with your families. Since school will be starting soon, we have just the perfect topic to shift gears and get you ready to learn!

Artificial intelligence, also known by the acronym "AI" refers to the stimulation of human intelligence found in machines. Today's generation is constantly surrounded by applications of AI. For example, AI has drastically improved travelling as you can now use Apple or Google Maps, allowing users to follow the most optimal route

Real-World Applications of AI
AI is used in our day-to-day lives. As of right now, some of the most popular AI adoptions are:

Machine learning: Giving a computer system the ability “to learn” using statistical data to become more reliable and efficient. E.g Online personalized recommendations based on your previous purchases, Youtube algorithm, Ad's on your phone

Natural language processing: Building a machinery system that can understand and interpret natural human languages. Siri, Cortana, and Alexa are able to understand human language and can respond to it.

Knowledge management: Receiving an organization’s intangible information and converting it into tangible assets. Data Storages use AI to provide data selection, analysis, and classification in tools such as Google Drive, iCloud, and OneDrive.

Tangible: Something that is material or real which you can touch.
Intangible: Something that doesn't have a physical presence/you can't touch.

Pattern recognition: Training a machine to recognize an image exactly like a human based on a particular pattern. iPhone X face ID can identify people’s faces.

Future of AI
Many brilliant minds have constantly debated when it comes to the future of AI. While AI does pose potential risks, it has impacted the future of almost every industry and human being for the better. It has acted as the main driver of emerging technologies and it is believed it will continue to act as a technological innovator in the future as well.

Challenge of This Quarter's Newsletter:

For September, we challenge you to test out these select Apps that use some popular AI adoptions mentioned above.

#1 Sentence Generator gets an image as input and creates a caption for that image. It does so by understanding the objects which make up the image and giving them a label. However, the AI is not perfect and sometimes it makes some mistakes.

#2 Emoji Scavenger Hunt uses AI to identify emojis using the mobile device’s camera in the real world. It starts by displaying a picture of a key, and the person has to go around the house looking for a real key. The AI will then verify whether they are correct or not using the camera of the mobile device.
