Let's begin.

1) We don't believe in luck anymore

🎲 Culturally, this has significant consequences because it negatively affects empathy. Alain De Botton, a British philosopher, shares why in a recent lecture:

In ancient Greece, if you passed by somebody who lost all their money on a business venture and became homeless you would say that they were unfortunate. Literally lacking a touch from the Goddess of Fortune, a powerfully divine entity who distributed her favors randomly (Ie. luck). You would assume the individual was void of luck mostly due to a force outside of their control.

However, in the late 1800s, this notion of luck changed drastically.

Today, most people would immediately see that person as making bad decisions. We would scoff at the idea that lady luck had anything to do with it and assume the individual was naive, inexperienced, or didn't create a business that added enough value. We wouldn't think that their outcome was a function of fortune.

Naturally, our instincts are to see the relationship between the value someone offers and the rewards they receive to be a fair trade... but they're not. The world is unfair.  Very often, unseen forces play a bigger role than we admit.

2) Priority or priorities?

🗒️ “The word priority was singular for 500 years—what does priorities mean—’many many first things.'” - Greg Mckewon

3) Firstversions.com

🥚 This site is a blast from the past.

It saves and makes public the first versions of popular companies today. Each brand has a profile showing its first logo, how it got started, and any interesting facts about the company's early days. There are thousands of brands and more being added every day.
Nike's on there with its first logo, first patented shoe, and other cool details.
So is Google with a sad early detail—the company started with the terrible nickname of "BackRub" because the technology it introduced, checks backlinks to determine a site's importance.
