Bumper crop of GB selection
15 August 2021

Dear WKC

We have finally seen some sunshine this week, which has seen some lovely paddling conditions over the past couple of days. It has been great to see so many of you enjoying the water and also back in the clubhouse on Saturday mornings.

We have not had too much activity in terms of racing at the club the past week but it has nice to receive the final confirmation for international selections for some of our junior and U23 paddlers as well as a chance for us all to socialise more as a club. On Thursday evening, club night will be restarting after over a year and a half off. Details of what it involves are below and it would be great some of our new members staying and having some food.

All contributions to the newsletter are appreciated and help us share news about the great place that Wey is with our members, help us build partnerships, attract new members, volunteers and coaches. Keep your photos and stories coming to comms@weykayak.co.uk

 Bumper crop of GB selections

We are very proud of all our paddlers who have recently achieved GB selection in a variety of different disciplines. U16 paddler Arthur M has been selected to join the British Marathon Development Team to compete at the French National Championships in September. Arthur will be racing up into the U18 category as well as joining forces with another U16 paddler he has never paddled with to compete in the U18 K2.

On top of that, Greta R and Nerys H have been training hard for their international debut at the Olympic Hopes Regatta at the same time. They will be competing a variety of different crew boats, K1’s and distances in the Czech Republic. In addition Greta R has been selected to race in Romania, as part of Junior Ladies k2 crew at the World Marathon Championships the end of September.

Due to covid travel restrictions Honor L has not be able to take up her place at the The Olympic Hopes Regatta, but will be taking to the water at the World Sprint Championships in Portugal at the beginning of September as part of the Junior Ladies K4 500m crew. She has been training hard since selections earlier in the summer.

Finally, we wish Chris C lots of luck as he heads over the Ocean Racing European Championships later this week to compete in the U23 mens singles after coming second in the Surfski selection event. We also wish Roy F luck competing in the masters races.

We hope there will be live streaming available of many of the events, a link to which we will share on TeamApp closer to the time so you can cheer them on from a distance.

Club Night is Back!!

2 course meal (meat fee option available) £3.50
Bar open for drinks (soft and alcoholic)
Dinner served from 7:30pm (ish)
Payment by cash, contactless and chip & pin

Kitchen Volunteers Sign Up

Club night, or Saturday bacon butties would not be possible without our amazing volunteers.  It is a great way to contribute back to the club, whilst getting to know more members (in a dry and warm setting!)  If anyone (paddler or parent) would be willing to help in the club kitchens on either a Saturday morning 11am -1pm or Thursday evening please sign up on the sheets in the kitchen.   Or to find out more about what is required, pop us an email at comms@weykayak.co.uk or speak with Holly M or Lois L.

Last chance!
Join the MacGregor Paddle Team

Entries will be going in around Friday so please speak to your group lead or get your entries to Pete Gorman at sprintteamleader@weykayak.co.uk as soon as possible so we can have the best chance of winning back the MacGregor title for the second year in a row.

If you are struggling with sorting accommodation or transporting boats, speak to your group lead who will happily help or pass you onto someone who can!
