Everything Kāpiti

Ngā Pitopito kōrero mai i te Kaunihera o Kāpiti

Kia ora Kāpiti

It’s a big week for transport with consultation now open on our proposed Traffic Bylaw, adjustments to a popular bus stop on Kāpiti Road to make it more accessible, and footpath improvements on Arawhata Road.

We're also asking for ideas from people who've recently built in Kāpiti to help us make the consenting process as good as it can be. Read on to find our more!

Have your say on proposed changes to our Traffic Bylaw

Consultation on proposed changes to our Traffic Bylaw is now open. The bylaw sets the rules for things like parking, our walkways and cycleways, signage and roadworks on Council-owned or managed roads and road reserves, public carparks and parks.

We've reviewed the 10-year-old bylaw, which is a requirement of the Local Government Act, and have proposed some changes to ensure it is fit for purpose for the next decade, this includes adding a clause to enable resident and business parking schemes.

We’re also proposing to rename the bylaw the ‘Transport Bylaw’ to better reflect the variety of transport modes we use.

Let’s talk about rates

If you’re a Kāpiti ratepayer you will have recently received an email or letter from us confirming your 21/22 rates for the year.

The average rates increase for the 2021/22 year was set at the Council meeting on 24 June, following community consultation on the Council’s 2021-41 Long-term Plan. Some of this increase is related to our proposed increased spending, but the Council is also facing higher costs and has no choice but to pass this on.

Rates increases will vary for different properties across the district. This is because of differences in properties value, type and location; changes in property values following QV’s 2020 revaluations; changes to our rating system; and an increase in rates from Greater Wellington Regional Council.

We know some of our community have financial constraints and we’ve increased our rates remission fund by $50,000 and changed our rates remission policy to widen the eligibility criteria.

If you’re concerned about your ability to pay your rates you may be eligible for rates assistance. There’s also a government rates rebate scheme for low-income homeowners. Visit our website to see what options might apply to you.

Te Urihi information sign installed

An information sign is now officially installed on site at Te Uruhi. The sign explains how Te Uruhi was developed and the project’s next steps.

Early site works will begin in September with enhancements to the Tikotu Stream and the relocation of a stormwater pipe that runs under the carpark. All going well, the main construction will begin early in the new year and Te Uruhi will open in late 2022.

Arawhata Road footpath improvements

Work started last week to replace the footpath on the eastern side of Arawhata Road, between Coleman Street and Cypress Grove, in Paraparaumu.

cones and construction on street

This is a big piece of work on a busy road so please take care if you're driving through the area. While it may look like there are a million road cones out there, these are in place to keep traffic and pedestrians moving as safely as possible.

Weather permitting, this work will be complete by the end of the month.

Bus stop on Kāpiti Road

Kāpiti Road bus stop safety improvements

The west-bound bus stop on Kāpiti Road near Arawhata Road will soon undergo some minor safety improvements. The surface of the bus bay is being lowered to provide passengers with safer and easier access as they board and alight from their bus.

During the works, a temporary bus stop will be set up nearby. West-bound traffic on Kāpiti Road will be reduced to one lane near the bus stop during the three-day work programme.

Share your building consent experience

Have you or someone you know recently been granted a building consent in Kāpiti?

We’re always looking to better understand the individuals and communities we serve. As the region prepares for continued growth, infrastructure, and housing, we want to help ensure that our range of regulated services and experiences are modern, accessible and customer centred. Right now, we’re interested in hearing from people who recently received a building consent from the Council.

Please share your experience in our short three-minute survey. You can remain anonymous, or provide your details if you’d like to be contacted in future to share your experience in more depth.

How prepared are you for an emergency?

Kāpiti's a great place to live, but we often experience earthquakes, storms, flooding, and landslides. We're also at risk from tsunamis.

When disaster strikes, your life can become up-ended very quickly and the comforts you take for granted every day may not be available. For example, you could be without power and your phone, and have no functioning wastewater system.

Taking some simple steps to prepare now will help you to get through an emergency as safely and as comfortably as possible.

Visit getprepared.nz and take the first step to staying safe during and after and emergency.
