OISF 2021 Walks and family activities

Greetings from the Festival!

With just over a week to the opening on Thursday 2 September, we're writing to let you know that all is on track, and to give updates on some special events.

In addition to the online presentations, we have workshops and schools activities online, and a programme of wildlife walks taking place in Orkney itself.

You can see the full Science Festival programme of events on our website. All the events will be streamed through YouTube so that everyone can access them freely.

Most events are freely available on YouTube, but there are some special ones which need advance booking and payment.

As well as events online, we have a programme of walks in Orkney. They've been specially put together by Orkney wildlife guide Megan Taylor of Wild Orkney Walks. It's a chance to see Orkney in detail, with plants and birds and insects, in locations with beautiful views - the Orphir hills and shores, the Yesnaby sea-cliffs, the Burwick coastline, and also a day's walking in Flotta.

COMPETITIONS

ORKNEY SEAWEED SURVEY - FAMILY CHALLENGE
What types of seaweed are on Orkney's shores? The information you gather can help a national seaweed survey, and also win a prize. It's one of several competitions, some for schools and some for families. The schools challenges range from bridge-building to finding a new form of data display for the mart prices. We have a wide range of educational events, for schools and for families. In fact, it's our largest schools programme yet.

The schools programme includes a range of pre-recorded events which are available to children and parents at home. We also have a whole page of links to activities and resources provided by many organisations, for parents, teachers and children to access.
