New ELIXIR report shows open data is at the heart of innovation

ELIXIR’s latest report, "Open data: A driving force for innovation in the life sciences" investigates the crucial role that open data has in driving innovation in the life sciences. The report represents the culmination of two years of research and work from ELIXIR’s industry officer Dr Kathi Lauer and Professor Hannes Rothe at the Freie Universität Berlin. It presents the key finding that seventy-six percent of companies surveyed stated that their product or service would not exist without data on open repositories. This report is an up-to-date quantification on the benefit of open data to industry and innovation. Follow the link to pick up your free copy today!

Galaxy Community Conference: Archive & Updates

After two intense weeks of training, conference and collaboration fest, the Galaxy Community Conference 2021 (GCC2021) has come to an end. This has been the second virtual GCC since the pandemic started and it has featured a week of training, a three-day conference and a two-day CoFest. In total, 399 participants from 55 countries attended any of these events.

The videos of all talks, and the PDFs for most talks and poster/demos are now available online. The individual talk pages now link to the video and the slides for each talk. The videos have been compiled into a single YouTube Playlist as well. The individual poster/demo pages  link to PDFs whenever possible.

A compiled summary of GCC2021 can be found on this page.  Also see the slides from the conference's closing session.

GCC2022 will be held in Minneapolis, Minnesota, United States, from July 16 - 23 at the University of Minnesota. GCC will coincide with the Aquatennial, Minneapolis's city-wide summer celebration of lakes and rivers in the city (of which there are many). See the announcement for more details.

The COVID-19 Data and Code Reuse Competition

The Swedish COVID-19 Data Portal invites researchers and the general public to take part in the COVID-19 Data & Code Reuse Competition. Participants should complete small-scale projects that make use of publicly shared data and/or code to combat the COVID-19 pandemic or any future pandemics.

Three winning projects will be awarded support from the SciLifeLab Data Centre to promote the project and/or to enable follow-up work. The exact type of support provided will be tailored to the needs of each project, and hence could take the form of free hosting for one year, free storage for one year, a feature on the COVID-19 Data Portal (e.g. as a data highlight or a page with visualisations), and/or visibility through press and social media of SciLifeLab and SciLifeLab Data Centre.
