Technology has long been at the heart of change in health and social care services. Over the past year, perhaps one of the starkest changes has been how we interact with each other and how our services reach the people who access them.

Demonstrating the pace of change, in just over a year, the NHS Near Me video platform has grown by 300 per cent. Near Me now averages around 200,000 calls every week in Scotland, and recently marked its millionth video call.

Many of us have discovered the convenience of accessing services remotely, and people now expect to engage with organisations this way.

In Falkirk, we have recently expanded the use of Near Me through our new Living Well Falkirk advice hubs. The service, currently in pilot stage this summer, offers a one-stop shop for accessing community health and social care services.

This is just one great example of the work happening across the partnership, and just one of the highlights in our latest news below.

COVID-19 service update

Services are facing ongoing challenges as restrictions ease - including a significant increase in the demand for support and reduced staff capacity due to self-isolation requirements.

As a result, Falkirk Health and Social Care Partnership is asking families for their support to deliver care to more people.  Along with service users, families, and carers, we will review packages of care to identify if we can temporarily reduce a package where is it safe to do so, with their agreement.

A letter to all social work staff has been issued, available here.

Spotlight on...

Each newsletter we will feature a service or team, shining a spotlight on the great work going on across the Partnership. This week's featured service is Strathcarron Hospice's Compassionate Neighbour programme.

Everyone, no matter what stage in life, needs a friend. That is why the Strathcarron Hospice compassionate neighbour volunteer programme provides practical and emotional support for people with life-limiting conditions and their carers.

The volunteers at Strathcarron know that palliative care and end of life support is not just about the last days and hours of life, but helping to maintain quality of life for the person and their family at every moment from the point of diagnosis.

The Compassionate Neighbours programme takes a de-medicalised approach to care. Its volunteers are focused on ‘being there’ for people experiencing life-limiting conditions and their carers. By focusing on meaningful social interactions and practical advice, the volunteers support people to live well right up to the end. The programme also aims to combat loneliness, which is known to be damaging to physical and mental health, contributing to lower quality of life.
