Towards the XXI Inter-American Conference of Ministers of Labor (IACML) of the OAS

Preparations are underway for the XXI Inter-American Conference of Ministers of Labor (IACML) of the OAS, to take place virtually from September 22 to 24 under the Chairmanship of the Ministry of Labor, Employment and Social Security of Argentina. This Conference will be the ideal space for Ministers of Labor, as well as representatives of workers and employers, to establish hemispheric positions in light of the great challenges facing the world of work in the Americas, through the adoption of the Declaration and the Plan of Action of Buenos Aires.
The discussions will be framed in thematic sessions that will address topics such as the role of the Ministries of Labor in the recovery of the pandemic; intersectoral coordination with the

Ministries of Education, Economy and Health; the strengthening of labor administrations to address the emerging changes in the world of work; and institutionalized social dialogue (a plenary session with representatives of workers and employers is contemplated).
The meetings of the Conference’s consultative bodies -the Trade Union Technical Advisory Council (COSATE) and The Business Technical Advisory Committee on Labor Matters (CEATAL)- will take place prior to the Ministerial sessions. Conference documents, as well as all logistical information, will be available on the XXI IACML website.

The Americas commemorates International Youth Day 2021

The International Youth Day 2021 was commemorated on August 12, highlighting and making visible the great challenges that young people in the region face after the COVID-19 pandemic, including the highest unemployment rate since 2006 according to the ILO Director for Latin America and the Caribbean, Vinicius Pinheiro. Within the framework of this commemoration, the Ministries of Labor announced actions to promote youth employment and school-to-work transition. The RIAL / OAS reaffirms its commitment with the countries to encourage these efforts and regional cooperation to promote them.

Research and review of the impacts of the RIAL in the region under way

After carrying out 115 Bilateral Cooperation activities since its creation, the RIAL / OAS is reviewing the impacts that this cooperation mechanism has had in the region in the short, medium, and long-term term. So far, interviews have been held with various Ministries of Labor in the region who highlighted the results that have been achieved in their country through the RIAL Cooperation. We invite those who want to be part of this effort, to send us an email to trabajo@oas.org to schedule a brief interview through ZOOM, and to share, in retrospect, what have been the main impacts of RIAL cooperation for their Ministries. The results of this effort will be briefly shared at the XXI IACML.
