CSUN's First Sustainable Fashion Program
Do you want to learn more about sustainable fashion? Are you interested in networking with professionals in sustainable fashion? This exciting new program might be perfect for you!

In partnership with the Los Angeles CleanTech Incubator (LACI), the Institute will introduce CSUN's first sustainable fashion program in Fall 2021.

Designed by Dr. Tracie Tung (Family and Consumer Sciences), Elline Deogracias (CSUN undergraduate student and IS student assistant), and Dr. Natale Zappia (Director, Institute for Sustainability), the Sustainable Fashion Ambassador Program offers students the opportunity to systematically learn about issues in different facets of the fashion industry but also enable them to have hands-on experience by leading and disseminating this information to their peers and CSUN community partners. The training of the Fashion Sustainability Ambassador program will take one semester and focus on three major aspects:

  1. Relevant knowledge development
  2. Conversations with practitioners
  3. Ambassador Action project
*This program is not available for course credit; rather, it is a series of workshops with a certificate of completion endorsed by the Institute for Sustainability.

Application Deadline: Wednesday, August 25th. To apply, visit https://bit.ly/SustFashionApp.

As face mask mandates and PPE continue to be enforced throughout parts of the United States, a study featured in National Geographic showed that, globally, "65 billion gloves are used every month. The tally for face masks is nearly twice that–129 billion a month. That translates into 3 million face masks used per minute." Although many face masks are disposable, they never truly go away.

According to a study in Environmental Advances, a single face mask releases around 173,000 microfibers per day into the seas. Littered face masks and gloves are blown into rivers and streams, which carry them to the oceans, affecting animals and marine life around the world. National Geographic explained that face masks, gloves, and wipes are not recyclable in most municipal systems.

The same National Geographic article stated that "the amount of plastic waste accumulating in the oceans is forecast to tripe in the next 20 years, with no real solution on the horizon."

Ways to Help
  • Non-profit organizations such as 4Oceans are cleaning up masks from beaches and oceans–you might like joining a beach clean-up if it is safe to do so.
  • Consider opting for reusable masks instead of single-use masks. There are also eco-friendly face masks made of hemp or recycled fabrics.
  • Dispose of face masks in a garbage bag that can be tied so that masks are less likely to blow away and into waterways.
  • Cut the straps off of ear loops on masks to prevent animals from getting tangled in them.

2021 CSUN Sustainability Award Recipients

For the first time ever, sustainability awards were a part of CSUN's 55th Annual Staff Service and Recognition of Excellence Awards! This year, Jean Porter and Ruben Lopez were recognized for their dedication to sustainability at CSUN.

The CSUN Sustainability Award is presented to an employee who goes above and beyond their work duties to support CSUN’s Sustainability Priority. The recipient embodies what it means to be a sustainable Matador through the implementation of operational, business, educational and/or behavioral changes. The successful honoree demonstrates passion, creativity and commitment to improving sustainability at CSUN.

About the recipients:

Jean Porter
is the Senior Budget Analyst at Academic Resources and Planning and has been with CSUN for 21 years. Jean has advocated for sustainability at CSUN for the last 10 years and recently became a Sustainability Champion for the department of Academic Resources and Planning. Through Jean's determined leadership, their department office attained platinum status from the Sustainable Office Program. Additionally, Jean has been known to be a great resource to the office and actively encourages those around her to make small changes with a big impact.

Jean served as co-chair of the founding "Food Garden Committee" to establish the Institute's Food Garden. Her support helped launch the garden, which is now a successful hub for sustainability service-learning on campus. Jean has served on the Purchasing Working Group for the CSUN Sustainability plan for over five years, ensuring policies and goals are being implemented and sustainable business practices are being adhered to.

Ruben Lopez is the Grounds Shop Manager for Physical Plant Management (PPM) and has been with CSUN for approximately 35 years. According to Ruben's nominator, Nikhil Schneider, "Ruben Lopez has continuously been one of the most enthusiastic and impactful partners to CSUN's sustainability efforts." In addition to using new projects as an opportunity to integrate sustainability into his area's functions, Ruben is a member of the Tree Campus USA and Bee Campus USA committees, providing his expertise to develop approved lists of tree and plant species for the campus.

Ruben has adapted bee managemet practices he learned at CSUN to his own home, teaching his family about the importance of pollinators and highlighting their beneficial impact on his home vegetable garden. His shop's activities are essential to CSUN's continued status as both a Bee Campus USA and Tree Camus USA. Ruben plays a key role in CSUN's single largest landscaping undertaking of the past several years – the Grounds shop operated a composting facility to process all of CSUN's landscaping waste through the P.I.L.E. project. Through his extensive knowledge and infectious enthusiasm, Ruben serves as an excellent spokesperson for sustainability at CSUN and the greater community.
