New CAO Policy: Transitional Arrangements for CAO Cases

With the implementation of the new CAO Policy, transitional arrangements have been made for ongoing CAO cases. Cases received after July 1, 2021 will be processed under the new policy. Cases received prior to July 1, 2021 that are currently being processed under CAO's Operational Guidelines will transition to the new CAO Policy after concluding their current stage of the CAO process. Learn more

Brazil: Complaint Regarding IFC-supported Valor Fund Referred to Dispute Resolution
CAO's assessment of a complaint related to the operations of Tembici, a company supported by IFC through an investment fund owned by Valor. The parties wish to engage in a CAO dispute resolution process. CAO's assessment report is available in English and Portuguese. Learn more about the case here
Togo: Compliance Monitoring Report Released Regarding IFC Investment in Lome Container Terminal
CAO has released a third compliance monitoring report following its 2016 investigation of IFC's performance related to the Lome Container Terminal in Togo. The report is available in English and French. Learn more here
Yemen: New Complaint Regarding IFC-supported HSA Foods
A new complaint regarding IFC’s investment in HSA Foods in Yemen has been accepted. The complaint raises concerns about pollution, potential landslides and waste disposal issues. CAO has begun an assessment of the complaint. Learn more about the case here

Facilitating Mediation in the Americas
CAO participated in the third edition of the American Mediation Congress, which included nearly 7,000 participants from 38 countries in the Americas, Europe, and Asia. CAO, the Independent Consultation and Investigation Mechanism and the Colombian organization, Ambiente y Sociedad joined in a panel conversation around the dispute resolution space within accountability mechanisms. Panelists discussed the role of civil society and non-governmental organizations in dispute resolution, the challenges related to engaging communities, companies and other stakeholders during the COVID-19 pandemic, and the importance of remediation and its scope within the context of dispute resolution. Other panels in the three-day congress included mediation practitioners, representatives from international organizations such as the United Nations, academia, youth, and social organizations that have been involved in mediation and peacebuilding around the world. This edition of the yearly event included 76 panels, 191 panelists from 21 countries mostly in Latin America and Europe. For more information, and recordings of all sessions, click here.

Nokukhanya Ntuli, Principal Specialist Ombudsman, Dispute Resolution: After a competitive hiring process, Nokukhanya Ntuli is the new Principal Specialist Ombudsman leading CAO’s dispute resolution team, promoted from Senior Specialist Ombudsman.
