WELCOME

Greetings! We're excited to share some great resources and let you know about a few events you won't want to miss. Happy reading!

Announcements

Our next meeting will be held
August 27th from 12 to 1 PM ET on our Zoom line!

Meeting password: 123

Derrick Sebree Jr. PsyD LP, will speak at our August meeting!

Dr. Derrick Sebree Jr.  will discuss how he practices from an eco-psychological framework, the relationship between humans and nature, as well as the climate impacts on health that are areas of focus for him.

Urgent Action:

Confused by what is happening in terms of the infrastructure bill, addressing climate change, and budget reconciliation? CCL's Flanner Winchester does a wonderful job explaining the "in's and out's" of the process in this blog and why taking action right now is so important.

Three actions are listed according to priority below. Please spread the word to friends and family on the first two listed, and to health professionals for the third. Thank you! Thank you to those who have already completed the first action.

  1. The CCL senate effort: cclusa.org/senate
  2. The CCL house effort: cclusa.org/house
  3. MSCCH effort here
If a price on carbon is important to you, I would suggest the following additions that are highlighted in red to the action #3 message:
  • About 1/2 through the email, at the end of one paragraph, I would suggest: "America's health professionals support a rapid transition to non-fossil fuel based renewable, non-combustible energy, energy efficiency, and 100% clean electricity by 2035 and an economy-wide steadily increasing price on carbon at its source."
  • At the end of the last paragraph I would suggest; "We have a once-in-a-generation opportunity to protect and promote health in the era of climate change. America's health professionals strongly urge you to do so by supporting all of these priorities including a price on carbon."

MIT's En-ROADS Global Climate Action Simulator Videos:

  • This 15 minute video explains how a price on carbon would work well alongside a Clean Electricity Standard to amplify the impacts of the many other policy initiatives we need, like electrifying the transportation and building sectors, as well as improving energy efficiency.

  • If you have conservative friends, they may prefer this 11 minute video instead.

Would you be willing to hand out postcards like the one below, equipped with facts about why we need to put an end to Line 5? If yes, let us know ASAP and we will get you set up with your own supply to share with friends, family, and community members!
We Are All In This Together! Our partner Minnesota Health Professionals for Climate Action has organized August 17 as a national day of action in support of Indigenous people who are at risk from the possible development of Enbridge's Line 3. . Yes, there is a Line 3.

Along with health professionals across the country, we have signed this letter and delivered it to Sen. Peters office on Tuesday August 17.

What can you do as an individual? You can sign onto the Minnesota letter here encouraging Pres. Biden to revoke the Line 3 permit today.

Together, we can do big things!

Active hope is a practice and it is not dependent on how optimistic we are. It is something we do rather than something we have and we can apply it to any situation.

Three steps:

  1. Take a clear view of reality
  2. Identify what we hope for in terms of the direction we’d like things to move in or the values we’d like to see expressed
  3. Take steps to move ourselves or our situation in that direction.
The purpose of this newsletter is to keep us on the same page between meetings and serve as a resource for this community. If there is anything you would like to include (upcoming events, a riveting climate health article, or something to add to the announcements), please do not hesitate to reach out to Ellie or submit suggestions to this google form.
