The Foundation
Before playing a game, take a few minutes to read the verse out loud from your own Bible. Show the children it is from God’s Word, not simply a nice phrase to remember. It’s important to know the verse yourself – where it is found and the words in the right order, even if you have not yet fully memorized it yourself. Take time to explain the verse to the class. Explain how this verse applies to their lives today and why it is important to memorize it. Define any big or abstract words or phrases. Ask the children what they think a word or phrase might mean; this will help you gauge their understanding before you define it for them. Repeat the verse as a class at least 2-3 times before playing any sort of review game.
The Fun
A game does not need to be elaborate or time-consuming. Consider these simple options:
- Have the children first whisper the verse, then shout it. Ask them to suggest different voices or accents they can use while saying the verse.
- Write phrases (or words) on papers and cut them into different shapes.
- Ask the children to help you make up motions for each phrase/word of the verse.
Have volunteers choose a different action for everyone to do while repeating the verse.
