Participant Art Show
The Participant Art Show was a major success! Thanks to everyone who came out and supported our talented artisans. This year we had jewelry makers, painters, collage artists, and more. Check out the photos from the event:
Grand Opening of the Coffee Shop
We are hosting a grand opening event for our coffee shop located at 2746 W. 13th Avenue on Wednesday, September 1st from 8am to 3pm. The open house will give the community, local media, and partners an opportunity to tour the shop. EarthLinks staff and program participants will be on site throughout the day.
“We’re excited to share our products and great coffee with the Denver community,” said shop manager Kevin Person. “Our Earth-centered production workshop and garden provide a creative outlet, yummy produce, and a community for our participants. Every purchase in our shop supports the work we do.”
Come get a drink, meet the staff, and sit outside next to the beautiful garden - see you Wednesday!

Our Coffee Roasters

Purple Door Coffee is a specialty coffee roaster in Denver, Colorado that employs teens and young adults who have been homeless and want to leave homelessness behind. Their name comes from the fact that historically the color purple is the color of royalty, and they truly believe that every person, no matter their station in life, has unsurpassable worth and value and deserves to be treated like royalty.
Founded in 2017, and based in the mountains of Evergreen, Colorado, Bivouac Coffee Company seeks to decrease the environmental impact of global coffee production through specialization in natural coffee processing, regenerative farming techniques, direct trade, and sustainable roasting practice. Bivouac is the first US-based coffee company to exclusively roast environmentally friendly, naturally processed coffees, from around the world.
Of course we have EarthLinks Tea for sale in the shop too! These are all-natural, organically grown loose-leaf teas. We have created three unique flavors featuring herbs grown from our garden:
  • Calming for a soothing hot cup of tea.
  • Healing for a liquid solution to any cold or illness.
  • Energizing for your morning jolt that gets you ready to take on the day.

Teatulia is a Denver-based, Bangladeshi-grown organic tea company working to create a regenerative and self-sustaining community. They bring the best-tasting, organic tea straight to your cup. Their garden started as barren land and they brought it back to life through regenerative farming. Women working in their garden benefit from innovative education, health and cattle-lending programs that help lift families out of the cycle of poverty.

Madison Hatchett (she/hers) - AmeriCorps VISTA

Madison was born and raised in Littleton, Colorado and has had a deep passion for sustaining our environment since first learning about recycling in elementary school. Her love for the planet continued to grow as she attended CSU and received a B.A. in environmental communications. In her free time, Madison enjoys creating art with textiles and moving about, often by tap dancing and going on long walks through natural areas across the state. She hopes to continue working in Colorado to create a more equitable community while preserving the integrity of Colorado’s beautiful ecosystem.

Humans of EarthLinks
by Kathryn Keyes

This month we celebrate Marlene!

Marlene was born and raised in Ohio. Although she’s been in Denver 42 years, she hopes to return to visit in the Fall. There was so much that she loved and appreciated about her upbringing. Her family lived next to an Amish community and dairy farm. She felt that her small town imparted wholesome values – hard work, ethics/morals/scruples were taught. There was a dress code, great, dedicated teachers - it was “so refreshing!”

By age 22, Marlene had four years of work experience, demonstrating truly outstanding job skills at a company whose director left an impression with her by saying “Winners never quit and quitters never win.” She excelled in sales - selling magazines throughout the country, winning awards and even a car! She traveled to 49 of our fifty states, plus a number of foreign lands. Marlene and three other young women from the same company flipped a coin and decided to move out to Golden, CO. She worked in the porcelain plant at Coors at night and as a teacher’s aide in the morning. Two years later she married and they had a daughter.

Marlene has been at EL off and on for years – her favorite activity is removing seeds from gourds, though she can often be seen drawing and painting cards in her spare time. She received a gift of a giant family photo album at Christmas where she remembered, with great nostalgia, those years growing up. “Those women made pies and banana bread every Saturday and took them into town to sell. Now there are B&Bs!” Marlene hopes to write her own memoirs one day.

A huge thank you to Marlene, for your vulnerability, kindness, and wise words. And thank you to Kathryn, for facilitating this interview and segment.

Thank you for helping to cultivate the community here at EarthLinks.

Throughout the past year we've learned that although we may not always be together in person, the strength of this community goes beyond the walls of our garden. Empowerment, resilience, and collectivity grow from our rich soil, and we will learn from nature that we can survive even the harshest of winters.

The EarthLinks Community has faced unprecedented hurdles this past year. Your donation will ensure the well-being and empowerment of folks experiencing homelessness in your community.
