Attend a Nearby IFWOA Forestry Field Day This Fall

In lieu of a large field tour in November, IFWOA is hosting four forestry tours around the state. Each morning tour will explore the forest and wildlife management and invasive species issues of a local landowner. Members will soon get a mailing about these events. Registration is limited, please choose only one to attend. Cost is $10. The tours are:

September 11: Noble County  Learn more or Register
September 18: Montgomery County Learn more or Register
October 9: Perry County Learn more or Register

Annual Woodland Owner Conference: Save the Date!

IFWOA will be hosting our annual meeting on November 6 at the Danville 4H Conference Center. This year will be a shorter one-day meeting in a larger space to ensure a safe event. Meeting details will be announced soon, plan on joining us for this event. More information will be posted on our events page in September and announced to membership.

Woods on Wheels is an interactive forestry exhibit.

Stop by the State Fair and Check out Forestry Displays

It's great to see fellow Hoosiers interact and learn more about forestry at the state fair. There are two exhibits highlighting forestry this year - the Woods on Wheels is an Indiana exhibit in the Ag/Hort Building on the southwest near the midway. The Forever Forest exhibit is a traveling display on loan from the Omaha Children's museum, located in the Farm Bureau building on the north side of the fairgrounds. The fair runs until Sunday, August 22 but is closed Mondays and Tuesdays. Stop by and say hello! If you are interested, volunteer to help staff the Woods on Wheels: Sign up for shifts at the Woods on Wheels exhibit

Spotted Lanternfly Discovered in Indiana

spotted lanternfly adultSpotted lanternfly (SLF) (Lycorma delicatula) a serious invasive plant pest has been found in a woodlot near Vevay in Switzerland County. This federally regulated invasive species harms plants by slowing their growth and reducing fruit production, especially in vineyards and orchards. Finding this pest this far west of its previously known distribution makes it possible for SLF to be anywhere in Indiana. Knowing where this pest is located can help us respond more effectively.

Spotted lanternfly prefers to feed on tree of heaven (Ailanthus altissima), but it has been found on many species including walnut, oak, maple, and various fruit trees. Congregating spotted lanternfly insects produce a sticky substance called “honeydew” in large quantities that over time becomes infested with sooty mold that attracts other pests in the area.

The Indiana DNR is asking all citizens to keep an eye out for spotted lanternfly. The bright color of late stage immatures and adults are easily recognized at this time of the year. Anyone who spots signs of the spotted lanternfly should contact the Indiana Division of Entomology and Plant Pathology (DEPP) by calling 866-NO EXOTIC (866-663-9684) or send an email (with a photo of the insect if possible) to DEPP@dnr.IN.govThis article adapted from IDNR Press release by Cliff Sadof, Elizabeth Barnes, Purdue University and Amy Stone (The Ohio State University). In August look for the fourth instar or adult lanternflys. Egg masses, which look similar to mud, are present fall through spring and can easily be overlooked and transported to other areas.

Invasive Watch: Norway Maple

Norway maple (Acer platanoides L.) is a member of the maple family from Europe and Western Asia that was introduced as an ornamental shade tree in the 1700s. It has been reported as invasive throughout the northeastern U.S. It is frequently planted as a street tree and has been seen escaping cultivation in nearby woodlots as well as invading higher quality habitats.

Norway maple looks similar to sugar maple (Acer saccharum) and red maple (Acer rubrum), both native species to Indiana. Norway maple can be distinguished by a milky white sap that exudes from the leaf petioles when broken (during spring, summer, and early fall), broad leaves, hair-like leaf tips, and bright yellow fall foliage. The paired samaras of Norway Maple form nearly a 180 degree angle, while those of Sugar Maple are less divergent, forming a 90 degree angle approximately. Norway maples will retain their leaves longer than other maple species in the fall. This article adapted from www.sicim.info June Invasive of the Month.

DNR updates bird feeding recommendations

Indiana DNR recommends that residents of the following counties continue to refrain from feeding: Allen, Carroll, Clark, Floyd, Hamilton, Hancock, Hendricks, Johnson, Lake, Marion, Monroe, Morgan, Porter, St. Joseph, Tippecanoe, Whitley.

Residents of other counties may again put out their bird feeders. Feeders should be cleaned at least once every two weeks by scrubbing with soap and water, followed by a short soak in a 10% bleach solution . Hummingbird feeders should be cleaned at least once a week with a 10% bleach solution and rinsed thoroughly.

NCX Carbon Program on Pause

Landowners who began enrolling in the NCX program recently received notice of a pause in the enrollment until December. NCX is working on getting third party verification for their programs. If you would like to learn more about this program that pays you to defer harvest for one year on mature trees, see the recent IFWOA webinar or go to www.ncx.com.
