Censemaking No. 39

Creative Sounds of Summer

Our Censemaking summer series continues as we look at the big, bold, and beautiful sounds of creativity, innovation, design and inspiration through podcasts.

Podcasts are unique creator-driven vehicles for sharing insights, telling stories, and engaging your ears, not just your eyes, in learning.

We’re going to provide a short run-down of some of the podcasts, shows, and other aural treats for your sunbathing, hikes, poolside listens, or walks into work.

From creative storytelling to psychology and design and whether your preferred channel is Spotify, YouTube or Clubhouse we have something for you.

Our lives are the stories we tell. May you find some inspiration here to help tell yours in new ways.

We will be taking a short break for the rest of the summer and look forward to the renewal and more stories that will come when we return in September. Keep well and enjoy the rest of your summer — Cameron

Podcasts are everywhere and provide us with a different way to learn - particularly while we are doing things like walking, driving, flying, or out for a run. We’re going to share some that we’ve mentioned before along with many new ones, too.

Innovation in Action

Seth Godin started branching into podcasts a couple of years ago and ever since he’s done just as he does with his blog: deliver wit, insight, motivation, and provocations on how to create work with purpose each Wednesday with his pod Akimbo. Make sure to visit the website to get his ample show-notes, too!

We mentioned Dan Pink’s Pinkcast in the last newsletter, but his short 1-2 minute reviews are worth a watch and listen anytime on YouTube or his website.

Mitch Joel was one of the first innovation and marketing-oriented podcasters who devoted craft, care and attention to making podcasts of quality. More than 10 years on his craft has honed itself into a body of work that is worth hours of your time with Six Pixels of Separation.

Another marketing gem is Under the Influence from Terry O’Reilly. Great storytelling and constant surprises lead to insights on how to communicate, motivate, and engage people you’ll get nowhere else.

The Knowledge Project is a long-form, deep-dive conversation on ideas about business, innovation, and society. This has the subtlety and breadth that few other pods will offer you allowing you to listen in depth for a full conversation on ideas that matter

Jocelyn K. Glei is a great storyteller and her Hurry Slowly podcast tells stories about doing creative work and slowing ourselves down to do the best work we can.

Hidden Designs

Invisibilia is a podcast about what’s all around us and hidden in plain sight. It will give you a chance to see the hidden forces that shape how we act. It’s behaviour + design + systems thinking all woven together with brilliant storytelling.

99% Invisible is also about the hidden and powerful effects of design. This long-running podcast looks at ideas and innovations around space and how we live and use it in our workplaces, cities, and homes.

Design Observer has been at the forefront of design journalism and education. Beyond Debbie Millman’s incredible Design Matters podcast there are many others from this platform to help you gain some inspiration around design and what it means.

Great services are designed. The Service Design Show is all about what service design is, the people that do the work, and ideas about what it means to create experiences and services people like.

And yes, Censemaking has its own podcast that is about to launch. We’ll have a lot of things that bring together design, psychology, and innovation just like this newsletter. More coming soon!

Psychology & Behavioural Science

Psychology has been slow to come to podcasting, but more recently we’ve seen some new, exciting forays into behavioural science, brain research, and psychotherapeutic work.

Adam Grant’s Work Life podcast is a great distillation of what we know about the psychology of work — social life, creativity, productivity, and performance. Grant’s an engaging interviewer and a fountain of knowledge.

The PsychCrunch podcast is another source of psychological wealth. This podcast takes on the challenge of taking the latest research and applying it to real life so you can apply it to your work and life.

Psychotherapist Esther Perel works with couples and relationships, but her advice and insight into the human condition applies to our relationships with ourselves as much as anything. Where Should We Begin? is a podcast that will help improve your relationships and yourself.

Hillary McBride is another psychotherapist who podcasts and her Other People’s Problems podcast provides a window into how people explore themselves. Sit on the couch with McBride’s clients and learn along with them in this engaging podcast.

Scott Barry Kaufman’s pioneering appropriately titled The Psychology Podcast is must-listening for anyone wanting to learn the science, practice, and leading edges of the field.

Human Life

Great innovation is also about learning more about who we are as people and there are some great storytellers who can help illuminate this.

Tired of listening to profiles of the same people and just hearing well-packaged stories of success? Multimedia producer and entrepreneur James Donison’s new Reaching for the Middle Podcast profiles those people who do remarkable things, but might not be at the top of the marquee. Reaching for the Middle is about where so many of us find ourselves, how we live with expectations, and what we do to thrive in spite of life’s challenges, turns, and twists.

Coaches Rising is a podcast for all of us who either coach or could use one. It profiles people taking on wide-ranging issues such as systemic racism, athletics, non-profit, and personal development.

Richard Atherton’s Being Human podcast is an atypical innovation podcast that explores the wide-ranging human qualities of what it means to innovate and create change in ourselves and our environments. Long interviews exploring deep, profound issues fill every episode.

Enjoy your summertime learning and listening and we’ll see you in a few weeks while we hit the beach…or somewhere else where we can listen to some podcasts and enjoy the sunshine. When we return we’ll have our own podcast to share (among a few other surprises).

Until our next coffee break….
