As stay at-home dads, we are often the ones there for many of the milestones in our children's lives. We are caring and capable of helping our children navigate life's turns. However, there is one area where most of us lack any personal experience. Menstruation is something our kids will experience and we need to be ready to be helpful, understanding, and supportive when the time comes. Join us for our August webinar with Dr. Julie Monaco, a family practice physician, as she teaches us the basics we need to be there for our kids.

When it comes to men and how they are impacted by these issues, it’s almost complete radio silence. It’s not that men don’t think about these things or aren’t affected—after all, they make up half of most couples experiencing these issues—it’s that toxic masculinity and gender stereotypes in our society tell men that suffering in silence equals strength and expressing emotions is weakness. It’s men not knowing how to feel, how to express those feelings, or if they’re even allowed to feel this trauma beyond supporting their partner.

The Annual Dad’s Trip started with 2 dads and 5 kids.  It was a simple single overnight trip to see the World’s Largest Ball of Twine.  I’m often asked why the ball of twine?  What makes it special enough to drive 200 miles and look at string for thirty minutes?

First off, it’s twine and not string.  They can get very defensive about that.  Second, we did it because it was there.

That first trip was 11 years ago. Since then, it has grown.  Our largest total of dads and kids that made the trip was 35 people as we went to play baseball on the Field of Dreams.  We have seen the World’s Largest Pair of Overalls, The Largest Pair of Underwear, and the Largest Pair of Shoes.  My dad’s group and I have seen the actual birthplace of sliced bread and visited where jumping jacks were invented.  And this last year, I took 5 dads and 16 kids to visit the World’s Largest Baseball Bat.

Early on as a stay-at-home dad, I realized I could do anything with the kids.  That word, anything, is huge when you look at it.  The only limits were my imagination and determination.  Anything.  We can do anything.  So, I thought about that word and what it meant.  I thought about what I wanted while being an at-home dad. What was important to me?

Memories.  It all comes down to the memories.  They are the fuel that keeps me going day after day for the last 13 years.  Remembering hand-feeding buffalo from a covered wagon or driving across a rickety wooden suspension bridge in my minivan.  Those memories are there when I need them most; when life is hard.  But more importantly, they are there for the kids and will be in the future.

When they are having their hard times or are unsure of themselves.  When they need to latch onto a memory to make it another day.  Those will be there because of the Dad’s Trip.  It’s never about the destination.  It’s about the memories we make along the way. As goofy as it is to see 6 different recreations of a Stonehenge, it is not without purpose.  I do it because I need to. They need me to

So, I start planning in December.  I get a lot of information from Roadside America and Atlas Obscura.  The money I save on grocery bills goes into the trip fund.  The first trip cost less than a hundred bucks.  I visit state and county tourism websites.  I get the magazines and look at the small advertisements in the back. And every summer, I gather my dad’s and all the kids.

Together, we do anything.
