Aloha,

In our continued effort to keep our Y employees and those we serve safe, and in support our community's effort in controlling the community spread of COVID-19, we will require all Y employees and program volunteers to be fully vaccinated or submit weekly COVID-19 test results effective October 1, 2021.

Y Program Volunteers are those who provide assistance as volunteers in our youth; health, fitness and wellness; and membership programs. These program volunteers are registered as volunteers with our Y and have passed background checks and required safety training.

We wanted to continue to keep you, as our Y supporters, members and program participants, updated on our Y's safety measures as we continue to work together to keep our communities safe.

I have copied below a news release announcement that we are sending to our local media for your information.

Mahalo for your continued support!

Greg Waibel
President and CEO
YMCA of Honolulu

YMCA of Honolulu Requiring Employees and Program Volunteers to be Fully Vaccinated by October 1, 2021, or Provide Weekly COVID-19 Test Results.

(Honolulu, Hawaii – August 12, 2021) As an organization committed to the well-being of Hawaii’s community, the YMCA of Honolulu has announced that effective October 1, 2021, they will require employees and program volunteers to be fully vaccinated or undergo weekly COVID-19 testing.

“While vaccinations are the leading public health strategy and best way to stay and keep others safe, we understand there may be personal situations not to vaccinate,” said Greg Waibel, president and CEO of the YMCA of Honolulu. “To acknowledge these situations, we are requiring those who choose not to be vaccinated, to provide weekly COVID-19 test results.”

The YMCA of Honolulu’s new vaccine and testing requirement follows Governor David Ige’s recent emergency proclamation issued on August 5, 2021, and effective August 16, that requires all State and City and County employees to provide proof of vaccination, or be subject to regular COVID-19 testing.

“Our new requirement was issued to help protect the health, safety and welfare of our communities in response to the highly contagious Delta variant that creates a higher risk of infection, especially for those who are not vaccinated,” added Waibel.

The YMCA of Honolulu is working with Kaiser Permanente to provide free vaccine clinics at its Y facilities. The vaccine clinics, which will offer a choice of either the Pfizer-BioNTech (Pfizer) or Johnson & Johnson’s Janssen (J&J/Janssen) COVID-19 vaccine, will be open and free to the public with walk-ins accepted. Upcoming YMCA / Kaiser Permanente Vaccine Clinics are scheduled for:

Mililani YMCA
95-1190 Hikikaulia St, Mililani, HI 96789
Sunday, August 15, 10 am to 12 pm

Nu’uanu YMCA
1441 HI-61, Honolulu, HI 96813
Monday, August 23, 1 pm - 4 pm
Monday, September 13, 1 pm - 4 pm
Monday, October 4, 1 pm - 4 pm

“The safety of our employees, volunteers and those we serve is our highest priority,” said Waibel. “Since the start of this pandemic, our Y has followed COVID-19 mitigation safety CDC and State guidelines. Now requiring our employees and program volunteers to be fully vaccinated or to be tested weekly adds an additional layer of safety and protection.”
